Got on the water about 2 Friday afternoon with my son in search of bait for Saturday hoping to maybe fish some that afternoon. Went to my bait honey hole and it had dried up. No flips at all for the first time this fall. Picked up a few here and there off my sonar but they were scattered and in very small groups. Ran into a guy in a skiff and he tipped me to a creek holding bait. Picked up about thirty dollar bills and ran into a guide finishing up his bait and he topped me off with 30 more. A big thanks to him, that let us get going.
Put out 6 boards all free line and two light lines started pulling out the back of the creek. My fall has been very slow, not much action and very few fish to show. That was about to change. Had a board get hit was gone before we picked up the rod. Just as I was reeling the board in had a lite line go off. Gave it to my son got it to the boat and it broke the leader. Hooked up again on a board after a good show. Same result broken leader. Kept pulling got a tripple, lite line and two boards. My son pulled the hook I managed to get mine in probably about 29" and the hook pulled on the board we had left out. Kept circling the back of the cove with a bunch of action. In all we lost 6 boated one and missed a few more.
While our results weren't great I was encouraged by the action. By far the best of the fall. I'm going to have to go heavier on my leader especially when fishing with my son. Can't get him to play the fish. He just reels down so hard on the fish gets the rod doubled over and a shake or run just breaks it off. He'll get it, I just need to get him on more fish.
Saturday I was solo. Boy didn't want to face the wind and cold. Was in the back of the same creek and pulling by 6:30. It was windy probably blowing about 10. The next two hours were kind of a blur. Set 4 boards and 4 lite lines. Started off with a double. Got them both in the boat. Re-set had another double landed both again. Circled around another double, while fighting the first had a fish start chasing a board knocking the bait up out of the water. Put the fish I was fighting back in the holder and grabbed the board rod. He finally hit, landed him and then landed the two lite lines. Looked up and it wasn't even 8 and I had landed 7. It was crazy. The bite finally slowed down and I started pulling out of the creek. Landed 4 more and a bass. Nothing very big. Most were in the 27" to 29" range 32" the biggest. The lite lines produced the most with 7 and 4 off the boards. About 11 my tm batteries died and had to pull everything in.
All of the board hits were on the bank side of the boat which was to opposite of the night before.
Need to get my batteries checked. It was windy and my motor is only 24 volt but I would think they would last more than 4.5 hours. Back to the dock to charge.
Headed out to a different creek about 3. Lost another in a tree that came off a board and landed a 22" large mouth. Headed in around 5. Got to meet Shadslinger as I was heading out. Always nice to put a face with a name.
Took my wife and son Sunday down to Chapel Hill to see Carolina play it's home opener had a blast. Great weekend.
