Not much to report on. All said, the day amounted to three surface strikes off the planers in the afternoon with no hook ups. Beautiful day though. I put in about 8:30, air was cool, wind calm, and water around 60. Got my cast net ready and started hunting some bait when a good Samaritan offered to get me some dollar bills! I made a few casts at some bigger flips in the meantime but no dice. In a few minutes, thanks to that generous offer, I had 10 of the nicest, and cured, baits you ever saw. I've had no problem keeping several big menhaden alive all day in my kayak live well, but I was concerned that bigger shad might not fare so well, and the reasoning for my wanting to try out some dollar bills before anything bigger. Turns out they all did fine, along with one money maker I was given later in the day. The fish acted quite different than a week ago, albeit I was using much smaller bait then. I had four strikes that day and all four hooked up, three I got in the boat and one got off. This time though, three strikes and none of them hooked. The other week they didn't break the surface when they hit the bait, this week they all three blew up on the top (especially the one that hit the money maker). These were all out on planers close to the bank, but it almost seems they were chasing the baits or tail slapping them like I've seen them do topwater plugs when casting in the river. Who knows? Can't wait for another lesson next week. Another big thanks to several of you who have been a great help. Much appreciated!

Interesting - we had little surface show and mostly just boards taking a dive and rods bending when we got a hit - or a tug when they didn't hook up. Love the surface show when you get it.

It's exciting alright! I try not to snatch it away too early and wait to feel the fish, though I may have jumped the gun on the first one.

Nice report! We experienced the same thing on sunday with baits being chased to the surface and rolled on, definitely a neat and very exciting show. I think some of it has to do with bigger baits being able to pull those redi rigs around more than a traditional planer so the striper have to do a little more chasing. I could just be makin that up though lol. Anyhow, good luck and hope to see you out sometime.
