Came over early Wednesday to do some prefishing before the tournament. Was on the water by 8:30. Loaded up with 4 dozen 7-9 inch shad and had lines in by 9:15. Pulled the creek where I got bait. It was pretty quiet. Did get a pullback after about an hour but missed it. After pulling out of the creek started moving around. Up river down river. A couple of other creeks. Didn't have as much as a swirl. The day really gets away from you when your moving around so much. About 4 decided to accept the skunk and hunt for bigger bait. Went to a few other creeks and all the way up river but couldn't find anything over 9".
Up the next morning to get some ales. Picked up 2 dozed medium to large ales off my dock and was able to go back to bed for an hour or so before heading out at 6:30. Started fishing main channel hooked up right away on a down line that went 27". Hooked up again on a free line board, that one went 27" as well. Had some chases and missed another on a board. I thought it was going to be a great day. As the sun got up in the sky it totally died. Moved around for a few hours and didn't even get a nervous bait. Tried adding some weights to the boards and pulling a little deeper thinking the sun was pushing them down, no dice. Fished until about 3 before calling it a day.
On the water first thing Friday. Started out in a creek. Same as the day before lots of action between 7 and 8 then dead. Managed to measure 2 27" and 29". Pulled until 11 or so with ver little action. A pattern was definitely taking shape. Decided I'd better greet ready for the tournament, dumped my tank and went to get fresh. Loaded up with about 50 of the same 7-9 inch baits I'd gotten Wednesday morning. As I was leaving I got to meet Seajay as he was on his way in and got to talke to Lund 1 as he was on his way in.
Family got in Friday evening and we went to check in then out to dinner.
Tournament morning was up at 5:00 to add some ales. My light was dead. Didn't mark a bait. Went to some more consistent lights in a nearby creek. Marked thick bait but it must have been tiny. Only brought back some key sized ales that happened to get stuck in the lead line. Threw until about 6:15 was only able to add two ales to my shad.
Lines in at 7 and started where I had fished the morning before. I knew if it was going to happen it needed to happen early. Missed one then put a 26 and 27 in the boat. Fished and moved for a few hours, had a chase from what seemed to be a nice fish but couldn't get him to eat. Lost half my crew at noon to a WVU game. It was so slow couldn't really blame them. Pulled around some points close to the house until about two and called it a week. A pretty slow week.
Finished with 53" not sure of the place but I would think it would be in the bottom half. Fishing wasn't great but really enjoyed the tournament. Great turn out, really have to credit Mike and Tyler for the great job they do. It has to be a ton of work to organize something like that and they do it for nothing more than promotion of our fishery and catch and release. Pretty incredible. Great job guys.
