What size bait? Big bait I'm normally blasting it to cover water until I hone in on some fish - 1.5-2mph is not uncommon - I'll mix it up once I'm on fish. For alewives, I'm generally not above 1mph.

^ Well since i can never catch any mongos i am generally using dollar bills (if i am lucky) or alewives. I just didn't know if you could drown them out, but after reading this i am certain i will not.

With alewives or peanuts, I keep it as slow as possible. Around .5 mph usually, or just enough to get the board out.
Like Tyler says, faster with larger bait. With big big gizzards, I go fast enough to keep them behind the board. Oftentimes they will swim past the board at slower speeds because they are trying to reduce the hook pressure on their noses. Big gizzards can swim pretty fast. Stripers can swim faster though.

By the way, it doesn't take much to drown an alewife.
Money makers and larger are pretty resilient on the hook.

That's great information. Thanks for all the input, now I just need to find those big baits
