I have been looking at buying a place at the lake most of the spring. We bought a place this past weekend at Lumpkins. I bought a CC 21' hydra sports skiff last week. looking to get some advice on outfitting it to striper fish. The boat is pretty bare bones right now. It have 4 rod holders mounted on the back and 2 up front. Any advice is appreciated. looking for boat set-up and tackle advice as well. I have been down striper fishing in the past with guides but it has been a while. I have mainly large and Small mouth fished in the past. Thanks in advance. here are a few pics of the boat.

My recommendations: - sell the foot-controlled trolling motor and buy an remote-controlled one - get at least a 80 lb thrust (24V) trolling motor. - rod-holders - I like the Cabelas / Scotty QuickDraw holders - but others are going to say get Drift-masters - a bit of personal preference. No less than 10 rod holders You mention having 4 in back and 2 u front. I don't see them in the pic.... if you're talking about the "rocket launcher" style rod-hoders, they are OK for the transom for float rods - but the others are needed for adjusting from downlines to planers etc. - Fish finder - no less than a 7" color screen. Lots of good options out there these days. Side-scan is a really nice-to-have - not absolute but can come in handy catching bait of when lookng for schools of fish - rods/reels, planer boards, etc - lots of good info / recommendations over in the Live Bait & Rod/Reel sections of the board.....

My advise....Take out a 2nd mortgage on the new place....Your gonna need it! You have entered the realm of high dollar fishing!! Break Out Another Thousand Just kidding....By the way, very nice boat. Also, keep a few artificial lures handy in the boat. You can see what I prefer to use at the following link: smlfishingforums.proboards.com/thread/4909/artificial-lures-striped-bass

I'll tell you what I wish I had known when I started about 2 years ago......your very first big purchase should be a legit tank. It will make your striper fishing time WAY WAY more enjoyable.

I second everything these guys have said. BAIT TANK and a good one, 10 plus holders, buy stocks in hooks and line haha. Copilot trolling motor is the only way to go in my opinion. A 8 foot or biger throw net. As far as graphs i agree with mike on 7 inch or bigger and there really is alot to choose from in lots of diff price ranges. Rod ans reels can get very expensive and lots of diff opinions on brands and type but most will agree on rods being 7 foot medium heavy for trolling. Hope this helps . Tight lines

For rod holders it has the rocket launcher style on it now you can see them on the back in the first pic. 1 is straight up the other angled. The other side matches and then there are 2 angled on the front where the side seats are. there are 2 scotty bases on the back up top on either side of the motor. It has a 30 gal. bait tank under the seat on the front of the console that the previous owner installed an aeration system on will this work? The trolling motor is a 54lb thrust minn kota V2 it has the option to add the co-pilot or is this motor too small and not worth the $150 to add co-pilot. I have been looking into the Helix 7 SI some does anyone have experience with it. As far as rod holders whats the easiest to take on and off. I don't want to get bashed too hard for this but I will need to recreate with the family some with this boat as well. Pull a tube or wake board from time to time. My wife and 4yr old love to fish but from time to time she likes to wake board a little. Thanks again for all the help so far. I am just starting in to this and on a tight budget with buying the boat so it will be piece by piece to start off. If anyone has any equipment they are wanting to get rid of keep me in mind.

ahh - I was looking at the 2nd pic and that's a foot-control motor... I see the PowerDrive V2 in the top pic now.... 54 lbs on a 21' center console is pretty weak in my mind.... I'd guess you'll drain the batteries when fishing out on most trips but could be wrong.
On the "rocket launcher" holders - you can get an adapter that slides in and then the Scotty type holders (Quickdraw) attaach - I use a couple of these.
On your bait tank - is it a filtered tank? Take some pics and post up and we can help you assess.

yes the 2nd pic has a different trolling motor on it. I will get a couple tank pics but i don't believe it is filtered. It has a pump that pulls the water from the tank and shoots it back out the top to circulate I believe but could be wrong.

Most everything that you will need will be available at Captains Quarters at Halesford bridge. The owner is Dewayne and he is VERY helpful and has a wealth of fishing knowledge too. His prices are in line with most of the other big places plus he is local. One other thing, if you are not a member of the Smith Mountain Striper Club I would recommend joining. The discounts for the Fitec nets alone are worth it and trust me it will add up.

Bait tank, a good 10 foot net, and a decent lowrance. Dont have to spend 2-3k on lowrance, but if you got the $$$ then go ahead. Even if you dont do side imaging, make sure to get atleast a dual broadband unit with DSI. Being able to split screen and compare the two different types of sonar takes it to a wholw nother level.... I would imagine you can probably find that in the Hook series. Captain's Quarters at Hales Ford can hook you up on a great deal with the Lowrance and net. Kenny Short has some good bait tanks. I think they are the Super Bait tanks.
Another thing, and no body on here will say it....but it good to have an extra 5 gallon bucket or two on board.

Thanks again for all the help. Will that bait tank that is under the seat at the front of the center console not work? It is aerated with a tsunami aerator. I am planning on getting a good sonar/Gps combo. I have fished with a couple guides but it's been years ago and I am not very familiar with the lake. I have been looking at the humminbird helix 7 SI and the lowrance elite 7 TI. $600-$700 range. I do not have the money for $1k plus electronics and bait tank at this time. I will be fishing weekends mainly at this time as I live just outside of Staunton. We did buy a place in Lumpkins so I have a place to stay. Just trying to get out there and get started. Also what rod and reel combos do I need. I used to troll Moomaw for trout and have all spinnning rods. 7' med/Heavy and then some 7' med action rods that I Large and small mouth fished with. I don't want to sound like I am cheap but I am looking to get my feet wet with out breaking the bank as much as possible.

My opinion is that the bait tank on the boat if not properly filtered it wont hold bait that great during warmer months or if you crowd it with big shad. As far as gettin by cheaper to get your feet wet walmart sells a rod called big game and i have 2 of them and they do the job (not my favorite but works just fine). Captain quarters have the redneck planners for sale and there probably your cheapest way of gettin planners. Hope this helps
