Like many of you, I am one of the weekend warriors hoping to find fish and this past weekend was one that I only had a few hours to fish. I was hoping to catch some stripers to be able to fix on the grill for a cookout later in the day. There was a couple of ladies coming to the cookout that can not eat red meat at all.
Sat. morning I headed out at 5:00am looking for some action. My plans were to sit on a specific point putting out some floats and free lines. With the wind as it was, three anchors would not hold me so I headed to an area with less wind. It seems most of the boat traffic was headed to deep water. I did not want to deal with the crowd or and only had a few hours to fish. I headed to an area where the wind would not be as bad. I found a few fish and started with some down lines and float. I did not get any takers so I put out a deep planer board and a shallow planer. At about 7:00am, the shallow board popped and I landed a 26" fish. About 7:15, the deep planer got nailed and I landed a 32" fish. Both fish hit over 50-70 fow as I came through at .5 mph. By 7:30, I was done and headed back to clean fish and head to a meeting.
On Sun. morning I headed out at the same time. I moved over to the same area as Sat. I did notice the SML guides and their groupies did not head to same deep water as Sat. Anyway, I fished the same area and all I got was short strikes with fish killing the bait, popping planers loose and floats/down lines getting hit and before I could get to the pole, they were gone. The last couple of weeks, I have had the same thing.
After yesterday, my boat was beginning to have the skunk smell again, but I would rather have it smell like that than have it sitting in the boat lift.
Guys, thanks for your posts. I do not get to fish anywhere near as much as I would like as I like many of you work that time in between family, work, honey do's and other have to do's. Yes, I do check out this board several times a week and daydream of where I should fish next. And BTW, I will do post when I can.
