I caught a trophy gizzard tonight - not sure the pic I have will actually do it justice but it has been eating well....look at the girth on that thing. So my question....is there ever a point where it is just too big (I checked over my shoulder when typing that to make sure my wife wouldn't see and laugh)

In short... No! Most will tell you that 4-6 inches is just fine. Oh... And they will settle for it. But every one of them really wants a 15+ inch Mongo.

Sure, there are times when baits can be too big. But my experience has told me that once the water gets above 50, and through the end of June, no bait is too big.
A few years back, I caught a net full of huge giant mongo gizzards in early May. I was looking for moneymakers, but we couldn't find them, and there was no way I was putting those big baits back in the lake. Some of them were 20", most were over 16". My wife and I both thought the bait would be too big, and hinder us. It was the exact opposite. Fish of all sizes were crushing those baits. We put a 26lber in the boat that morning on a 20" gizzard, and a bunch of other fish over 15 lbs until we used them all up. No stingers, no fiddling, just a bunch of no-doubt-about-it bites.

If you ever think a gizzard is too big, bring it to me, I'll take it!

All of you were wrong.
Next time a rookie asks this question the proper response is no... And then probably .
No... They are not too Mongo for the stripers.... And they are probably too mongo for the crappy piece of dog turd planer boards you are going to try and use to drag that thing around with. I think i just set a guiness record for most cuss words used in a 5 minute span.
Soon as those 5 minutes were over i was on the phone to Captain's Quarters... No answer.... Anyone know if they are open today?

Coheasion - are you trying to pull that with Waterbugz? Even a Redneck, or Outcast or Rock Creek is going to struggle with a beast of that size - but just give that one a little extra room in the spread....
CQ should be open.....

By the way - you've got the same pic there twice.... would love to see the other pic that shows the fullness of that beast...... and I'd pamper him well till Saturday... just saying

When you are pulling those bigguns, go faster.
If not, that gizzard will swim past your board trying to ease the pressure on that hook in his nose.
Go fast enough to actually pull it. It might be 2mph, but you won't have tangles, you will cover more water, and you will still catch fish.

I'll be fishing on the BW Saturday and if you'd like I'll drag him around with a gatorboard.

You might check with Kenny Short. I was told he was making the trophy stalkers in larger sizes up to 24" and you can usually pick them up at his dock.
