I have a random question for you experienced fellas. Probably a dumb one, but is there any major advantage/difference fishing planer boards vs using down lines and light light life lines besides the planer's can cover more water at a time? Been wondering this for a while now, and HAD to ask to see if I was missing something. I caught 90% of my fish last year on down lines and love get lines opposed to the planer's I used. Thanks guys.

Planers let you spread your baits out, to cover more water. Also it allows you to run baits shallow, without the boat spooking fish. For most of the year, the stripers will come to the surface to get a bait, so that's where I generally put them. July, August, and early September is time for downlines in my book.

Gotcha, as I said I had to ask because last year i caught a few fish with the down lines oppose to the planer's. Just not used to the planer's probably is all it is, and have to get used to them. Thank you sir!.

Riddle me this: What if you run a down line from a planer. I'm pretty sure the time space continuum will collapse.

When you guys are saying downlining are you just meaning you are catfishing kinda Carolina rig bottom presentation.. With a fluro 4 foot leader? And have any of you tried a drag rig for stripers? Or a 3 way rig and using trolling motor and drag along bottom with live bait or maybe even cut bait, in the summer?

Downline is just a line hanging down over the side of the boat usually intended for suspended fish. Typically a 2 Oz wt is used above a 2-6' leader. Generally fished well off the bottom.
