I would have bet you $1000 I would not have fished this last tourney! This $1000 would be better off in your pocket than lost to the fishing gods.
I went fishing on Thursday to throw InsaniTee. My goal was to throw it 30 times and I reached my goal. Happy Camper....I did it!!! I also found a pattern on the fish and bait. It seemed to me that the majority of fish were holding by a particular creek and that the bigger fish were both below and above the major mass. Mind you, I didn't catch any of the bigger fish...but I'm sure of what I saw on my electronics. Thursday was a tough day of fishing for me...I only caught one 27" all day long. However, I did have action everywhere I went. I also found that the BIG mongos (13'-15") are starting to find my net! YIPPPPEEEEE! I love the smack of a monster mongo as I flip it out!
Friday morning begins and I start taking uninterrupted texts from Satan himself about entering the tourney. I had 0 hours of sleep on Thursday, threw a sledge hammer all day long, got into a fight with my wife on Friday morning, damn near bit a student's head off at school for cheating on a homework assignment, and was looking forward to just cleaning my boat.
Thus, it was time to hit the tourney! You win Satan! I'll donate to your SHAM!
So.....rather than make the same mistake twice, this time I spent some very patient and slow moving times getting my rods in "tournament shape". All lines were cut and retied with precision. I then decided that I would take my 3 finest rods out and put them in the rod holders to further eliminate any chance of line damage. I didn't want to lose that 30 pounder that I have been tracking all of Autumn!
Still relaxed and finally all loaded up, I started my trip to SML. First things first, I have to back my boat into the carport to get out of my driveway. And unfortunately, my good rods do not like high impacts with steel. Yep...all three rods (way overpriced) that were primed and ready were now in splintered shambles. They snapped so bad that I found a rod tip in front of my truck! HERE WE GO AGAIN!
Okay...so I cant stop something I start. I'm off to SML.
I get there by 9pm, sign in, and start throwing for bait at Campers. Around 11:30pm with a crappy tank of dollar bills and a few money makers, I am in the hotel room attempting to fix two stinky nets that both had braille lines untie from tree snags. By 2am and no sleep later, I decided to hit the water! COLD and foggy and no sleep.... it was rather weird. That fog was doing some real strange things to my mind. Hallucinations were everywhere! I swear I saw my grandpa I have never met...apparently he liked to fish too! Then BAMM....I nailed a very big LOG in an area where there was no debris. This was a major hit! But I swear my trim tabs saved me from any damage..none. Just another bout of adrenaline that I did not need!
Well somehow, I was able to get a tank full of beautiful bait and was fishing by the bell at 6:45. And let's just say that I was fishing....not catching. I determined that most of the tourney folks knew what I knew and were both above and below the creek that is holding the mass. Thus, rather than get into that mess and play the lottery, I decided to concentrate my efforts further above my original area of focus. My thinking was go big or go home. After a day full of short strikes and disappointments, it became obvious that after all my perseverance, I was given the "GO HOME" reward! I did mange to catch one 27" fish around 3pm but I didn't even check it in because it seemed that the bite was on and I wanted to catch a big fish rather than catch a door prize. Poor decision once again...the door prize would have been better!
Sunday, I licked my wounds and enjoyed a wonderful day of fishing after a long night of sleep. No pressure, easy going and peaceful. I joked with some old-timers on the water, I caught my bait, I pulled it, didn't care about catching fish and damned near yanked the jaws off of every sub 30" fish that I manged to catch on Sunday
I really need just one more day of catching 15 pound plus fish before winter begins. Just one more.....please!
One thing about me is that I know that I learn the most from tough times and failures. Thus, I had another great trip on SML!
CHEERS!
