Weather: sunny, temps in the 60's rising to low 80's, light winds
Water: 81-83
Techniques: Jigging (or dead-sticking) flukes, and also an occasional monster spoon - jigging 30-60' over 40-100' bottom
Planned for some jigging time on Saturday with my buddy Mark over on his side of the lake. I went up Friday and we rode around a little while Friday evening to see if we could find any, but never did...... I did play around some with a new spoon I picked up - a Ben Parker Magnum spoon - 8" / 4 oz. Have seen where the guys on Lanier are having success with this so thought I'd give it a try on SML. TONS of flash in the water.
Nice sunset...
We headed out about 7:30a on Saturday morning and started looking. In addition to my regular fluke jig and the Ben Parker spoon, I rigged up a double fluke rig - using a "drop shot" clip that I picked up from Moe's Tackle in TX.
You slide a hook into the middle of the clip - and then tie it to your leader with a section of leader (and jig) below.....
Here it is about 5' below the water.....
We found some fish pretty quick - but could not get them to touch a jig (or spoon). We called over SeaJay who was hooked-up with live-bait before he could even get the line all the way in the water.
We got tired of those fish not wanting to eat our jig so we went looking..... spotted some scattered fish elsewhere where one of Mark's jigging buddies had hooked up. Mark picked up one but they were not really active
After a while SeaJay texted a pic of the fish he was on...... he got 5 out of this pile I think....
So we high-tailed it over there........ marked a few but again they would not touch the jig.... so we went looking again at some mid/late morning spots. Found some small pods moving through and Mark hooked up again
Fish elevator....
Was very slow after that...... we worked around some submerged points around an island.... the most interesting thing was this on the side-scan... still don't know what this was..... Must be Aliens
Mark hooked into one more to end the day - three total for the day on his end. I had 1 bump of my lure that I missed..... sucked to be a live-bait fisherman with a jig rod in his hand that day......
I'm ready to start pulling gizzards again... how long till Fall?
