Does anyone know where I can find a good light that may hold some bait early evening or just before daylight that I could throw into without getting the boat wet? Possibly a public boat launch? I'm on vacay this week and want to give it a go in the morning of the downpours will hold off. I live about an hour from SML, so hate to pull the boat there tonight or tomorrow night haul it home and get about an hour of sleep for the next morning. I know most of you would will hold that against me? ...but can't really afford the fuel as well. My other option is to get some of the large minnows, like I have been using. Only thing with that is I don't have much confidence due to the lack o strikes I've had using them, and I I don't have confidence in my bait I may as well stay home. Thanks guys!!

Your best bet is likely is to just go to bed early and get up very early and hit the lights in the early morning hours. Not sure that any of the public launches would have a light close enough to hold bait.....

Thank you! I'll just get up a little earlier and head that way. or you can sleep in and fish with artificial baits. That's what I do this time of year. That jig action is a blast.

I trolled with a 5in white swim bait with a spoon trailing last weekend, but could get that even thought about, and I just could not find any fish Sunday AT all. I tried a white with a chartreuse tail with the spoon in the other rod but no action at all. I wanted to try some down lines the next couple of days, and wanted to get a few alewives, but I'll either get up extra early and head that way, or I'll just be lazy and pick up some large minnows and give them another shot.

Pardon my ignorance, but when you jig for SML striper, are you just trolling around and finding larger schools, then dropping a spoon or 1oz swim bait into or just above the school? And when trolling for example, on my lowrance I have the sensitivity turned up to 90% and putt around at about 3-4 mph looking for a decent school. Interested to know what others do.

Not to dodge the question - but check this write-up smlfishingforums.proboards.com/thread/1680/jigging-101 starts off on Winter-time, but some other info.... and a lot of it is generally applicable across the year - just no birds except in the winter.....

I do have some white buck tails on hand as was stated in the write up!! May give them a try as well. As far as alewife go, anyone know of any decent dock lights around hales ford that you wont get blasted by the owner if you use their lights?

If you are in your boat then the water under the light is a pubic resource and they can bark but they better not bite.....

I hear ya, and dont mind at all to throw under someones light, but just like to try and avoid the conflict if at all possible. Sometimes you have that trouble, im sure we have all been there on the water at some point in time while either catching bait, fishing, traveling down the lake obeying the navigation rules, etc....
