I had a coworker fishing with me on Saturday. Unlike others my bait was not so easy. I turned on my light before dark and threw 2-3 times up until midnight before calling it an evening. I had plenty of very small ales but nothing of any size and questioned whether I would even go this morning if things didn't improve. Had my alarm set for 4:30 to try for some larger bait. Two tosses and I had several dozen large ales and 10 nice mongos. Not sure why the decent bait doesn't hit my light until the middle of the night but that's the way it has been for the past 2 months.
I had not fished in three weeks and I really didn't know where to start. I headed to B&B and immediately started marking a decent number of fish. Lines in the water by 5:45. We setup six planers four down/light lines and a float out the back. Plenty of nervous baits but nothing other than a near 4 lb. largemouth during our first 3.5 hours. There were 6-8 boats hanging around most of the morning but we never saw anyone boat a fish.
I was determined to get my friend on a few fish before we called it quits so we headed south and a little west to the darkside. SeaJay and I caught a couple in this spot about a month ago and he had been reporting of some continued success through last week. It was 10 am and traffic was picking up. I told my buddy that our previous success had come in that 200-300 yard stretch in 30-40 feet of water. We marked nothing. Six planers, two light/downlines and a float. After deploying the planers, the first light line went off while I was still letting out line. Turned out to be a small 21 inch fish right at 4 pounds. Even with a small fish, my buddy lit up. The adrenaline rush was on. Within a minute or two a planer shot back and he boated another smaller fish that was 23 inches and 6 pounds. Five minutes later another planer went down. This was a long lean fish, 27 inches and just over 6 pounds. Before we called it quits at 11:45, we had a board get hammered. It was on my side of the boat. After setting the hook, I knew we had something pretty decent. I handed him the rod. He was excited. It made a few runs and once we got it boated it turned out to be a 13 pounder. A thirteen pound CARP.
It was a fun morning. We didn't have a ton of action but we did accomplish the mission of putting him on some fish. All fish came on ales.
