what kind of bottom do you look for?

No...not that kind of bottom. I'm talking lake bottom. I was looking at FishOn's excellent screen shots he just posted and noting the smooth sand(?) bottom below that school. I'm wondering if thats something worth paying attention to? I've never really paid attention to bottom type when I mark a decent school....but then again it seems like it rarely happens with a heavy tree presence below.
Is this one of those ridiculously obvious fish locating strategies that it's taken me 10 years to even notice and question? Another words, are half the members reading this saying "Good Lord...that Lund1 is an idiot! Of course bottom type makes a huge difference!....no wonder 5 fish is a banner day!"

Darn it. I thought we had you converted to the unruly type. I have marked schools of fish in all bottom types and depths of water. I can't help it.....I like ghetto bottoms

I never consider the type of bottom either.. But, I do think about how many feet it is to the bottom.. There have been times when I would see fish where there was a 50' bottom etc.. As in, I would only see fish when the depth was between 60' to 30' etc... But, I am self-taught and no expert. (So, there might not be anything to my above statement..)

I would be curious to hear what Bentrod, Biggun and Mike have to say on this topic..

I've not seen a striper on a hook in June except in pics on the forum, so what do I know But I'm not sure they hold to a specific bottom type - other than a bottom full of trees that they will hide in, especially in the peaks of the summer....

I've always wondered about bottom depths - do think there is something to that.... especially when there is a thermocline... seems like I remember someone here posting about targeting points at a depth where the point extends into / below the thermocline when it is set up?

Another thing is, I check spots more so then just drive around and hope I run into a school.. It just seems like these fish like to hang out in the same small spots year after year..
If I were to go over to BW I would be lost and I think I would have a really hard time finding fish.. But, who knows as I have heard there are more fish over at BW. I have seen Shad taxi run by my house every morning for the past 5 mornings heading to either black water or the dam.. I think Burt now pretty much only fishes BW as well.

Hmmmm great bottoms--'naw I'm not going to say it. Lol. Considered a major predator these fish chase bait, I personally think they go where the bait goes and have no idea nor care what the bottom looks like. They do bottom feed a great deal but again following bait. You find bait -fish are near. Unlike guys they don't watch the bottom much.

So the General consensus is the type of bottom isn't important...but clearly the depth to bottom is.
I'm gonna start noting bottom type in my journal so I can look back at all the different styles ....when I don't catch fish.
Where and when I do catch fish will be revisited over and over regardless.
