Last week I learned that I really only need to get on the water an hour before sunrise to catch bait. Thus I arrived this morning once again at 2am. Only this time, rather than catch small ales, I caught large branches and enough leaves to sink my boat. Then an hour before sunrise, 4 throws yielded 50 or so nice ales and 6 small mongos. Hmmmm. There is something about late night, stars, blue lights and nets that keep me coming back.
As the sun rose, I went searching for breaking fish. And this time I found them. After basically trashing my transmission with the ole reverse from WOT, I then lowered my TM and cranked on the gopro. 3 casts of the spoon yielded 3 8 pounders. And then, I basically ruined my chance to catch more because I wanted to feed the spaghetti splashes mongos. However, they were more interested in hooky metal and vanished.
So then I went on a morning pull. And of course, my first taker was a 7 pounder on a down line ale. I remember saying to myself... "Mongos suck" ... And you know what happened immediately thereafter? You guessed it.. A nice 11 pounder engulfed my outer board. And this was no stinger catch either.
It's mongo time boys!
So I then caught 3 more 10 pounders all on the outer board mongo free lines... Oh yeah!
Of course I was then out of bait and I eagerly went on a mongo hunt. Oh how I love catching mongos. The 3/4 Wade, the search, the electronics, everything about it. Ales... Fun... MONGOS... Pure bliss!
So three hours later, after meeting a few forum members and throwing the net at least 30 times, I caught just one lonely 15 inch mongo. I tried everything. I just couldn't find them in the afternoon. Weird. But that one freaking bait put on a show of a lifetime! He must have jumped out of the water 5 times before another 10 pounder dragged his scared ass into the dark depths of SML and sucked him down. And it's all on film... It's a masterpiece that I can't wait to share.
I did catch a few more fish on ales in the evening and jigged up a few but who cares... Its MONGO Time!
Pictures and video will come later. I need to sleep and dream about sticking sharp hooks through the noses of scared BIG bait.
