Anyone know if I could catch shiners at penhook or sm state park?

You can catch them at Captain's Quarters - with a $10 or $20 Just kidding - never tried to catch or seen anyone catching shiners - you can easily catch alewife with a cast-net under the dock lights or maybe in the back of the creeks during the day.

I've caught shiners, but you can throw for a week and only catch 1 or 2. You'll wanna buy them.

You can catch them at Captain's Quarters - with a $10 or $20 Captains Quarters - bait/tackle shop right at Hales Ford bridge on VA122.

Franklin Outdoors in Rocky Mount carries a good assortment (medium, large, jumbo) also. I'm with Mward re: alewives. Trouble is I've been having a hard time finding them lately here on the BW. Probably need to get up about 4 am and hit the docks.

Ales are coming to lights in creeks on Roanoke side. Caught over 100 with one throw of net at 10:30 last night.

G&S market has them. You probably won't have much luck striper fishing with them
