My dad has told me in the past and lately that 30lb is almost a bit too much. Being that we use 30lb for our leaders when surf fishing. He's told me that he thinks 25lb would do just fine. I'm considering going down to 25lb but I just wanted to know what you guys use for braid and mono especially with the bigger Stripers. Thanks?

I've used 20-25 mono for my lake reels with flouro leader between 15-25. 15 mono might even be better for downline reels with small bait but I want to be able to horse them out of the trees if needed.
For the bay I use 30 lb mono and 50 lb flouro leader.

I like power pro braid in 50lb test with 30 lb test flucrbon leader for live bait. If you are trolling lures you might want a smaller lb test leader.

My old man swore by 17lb stren and caught countless 25lb+ stripers trolling and bait fishing. Now he also never used U-rigs back in the day. Do I use 17lb?...NO

Rockfish knew what he was talking about.....back in march, i'm thinking 1983, had my line broken 3 times one morning casting bucktails just below the bridge....thought next hook up, i'm going to follow the dang fish with my trolling motor so it won't break my line.....don't care if I have to follow it to the dam. Every time it would take off really hard, I would hit the trolling motor...followed it about 75 yards before I finally got it in......switched to 17 lb. stren (still use it) and as far as a fish pulling and breaking my line, has not happened.....going to have to post up a pic of the citations i've caught over the years one day.

Trolling what?? Live bait, artificials, u rigs?
Each of those would likely call for something different. I use 20-25lb on my live bait rods. 15-25lb leaders. For u rigs I would think 100lb or so braid would be best. I don't use braid on my live bait reels for two reasons, 1 - stretch is your friend in live baiting and 2 - I would dread seeing 4-5 braided lines tangled together. But for trolling urigs or artificials it may be your best bet.

But for trolling urigs or artificials it may be your best bet. You just have to be careful with heavy braid. I used to fish from a 16' tin boat. I got a u rig hung using heavy braid so I cleated it off on a stern cleat to try to break it free. I about sunk the boat by pulling the stern corner under The u rig didnt come loose but I broke off the top 6' or so of the tree after I bailed out the boat.
