Caught 45 or so. Kept 32 for the frying pan Also caught several nice white perch in the mix 1/32oz. Jig head with Gulp minnow was the winner today

Do you find jigs work better than live minnows? I’m new to the crappie game

Well in my opinion you can catch more on jigs. But that’s coming from a guy that never uses minnows either, lol!! I grew up fishing with jigs for crappie and just never have had any need to use minnows, I catch them just fine without

For me, jigs will out produce minnows every single time, no matter the conditions. And by a very wide margin, like 4:1 per unit of time - at least.
There was a time when I would never have believed the above statement…
Of course I have a large box with *almost* every type of jig body and jighead one might ever need to catch a crappie. And I’ve *almost* learned when exactly to use each one of them based on conditions and experience.
Not all of the 4:1 ratio is due to the bait itself…

Haha! That’s great.. I have about every single color imaginable in all plastics (someone gave me good gift cards for Christmas) I need to give it a try, find some deep docks and go at it!

If y’all need to feed your addiction I’ve got a buddy in SC that focuses on crappie and pours / shoots his own plastics and sells them - some good looking stuff

Or dock-shooting-specific custom rods? I need custom crappie rods about like I need another bag of crappie baits, but I still need one (or both) 😂.

Now I’m with you John, I’m in need of a good crappie dock shooting setup. I have put together a rod and reel that I had laying around for that purpose and it works but I think could be much better. I have spent many a hour in past couple months practicing my shooting skills. Actually have gotten pretty decent at it and it has really helped my catch rate, that along with Livescope. Crappie love to get way up under these docks almost impossible to get to but the shooting does improve the success.
I too have tons of colors when it comes to jigs but honestly have narrowed it down to about 4 that are my go to. The others just take up space in my boxes and look cool haha
I will also add that if you haven’t fished with Gulp minnows then you are missing out, I have found that on days when I just can’t get them to hit anything else the will almost always hit the gulp, especially days that the are short striking my other jigs. The Gulp makes them commit.
I do wish Berkeley made a gulp minnow that was 6” long, I do believe that would be a striper catching magnet.

I wouldn’t even know where to start…..
