This report courtesy of www.TheBassCast.comApril 28, 2019....Rick Tilley Jr & Sr. win the Big Bass Tour with 6.67 lb, at Smith Mountain Lake
What a crazy past three days of fishing on Smith mountain lake for the 2019 Big Bass Tour! With the weather changing each and every day, there were quite a few great looking bass weighed in. This event never seems to disappoint, bringing 903 anglers from 21 different states and Canada to beautiful Smith Mountain Lake. This event had payouts every hour with the overall lunker for the weekend winning a Nitro Z19. Congratulations to the father and son team of Rick Tilley Jr & Sr, weighing in on the first hour of the first day with 6.67 lbs!

There's other fish in the water besides bass.

The other fish aren't as easily exploitable for profit by a bunch of dudes who, solely in my humble opinion, couldn't give a rat's behind about conservation of the fishery.
I'm a fan of capitalism, the "it's a free country" mantra, and generally avoiding imposing my own beliefs unto others who aren't directly related to me -- but I've had a hard time not getting riled up over (and admittedly struggle with the fact that I'm riled up over) this particular event.
I realize that it's a fun time and there are benefits that could flow from it (tourism, some dollars injected into the local economy, the promise that hopefully a few kids got turned on to fishing, etc.); however, there's just something about the event that is distasteful to me. It's no use at this point trying to articulate it, but the two general thoughts that pop out in my head are "self-indulgent" and "undisciplined." By the same token, I hate coming across as "holier than thou...," as, again, who am I to impress upon others any disdain for undertaking what the law/regs allow?
Personally speaking, I'd like to see DGIF put some parameters around the timing of this event. Until that happens, I probably should keep my mouth closed and deal with it (but that's easier said than done).

Might I suggest those of you with all this angst come out to the event and check out the process and our fish care before you make judgements on something you’ve never seen?
Regardless, we enjoyed this years event and appreciate everyone who participated this year. It was also great to have the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries out doing some data and tagging work this last weekend. They’re doing great work at SML and the fishery is in great shape.
See everyone next year!
