My friends and I are going to be fishing SML for the first time from May 11-18th this spring. We will be staying directly above the Hales Ford Bridge. We fish only artificials since we aren't set up for keeping or using live bait. In previous spring trips to Lake Cumberland, KY we've done well at night on stripers as well as walleye with topwater (redfins, jointed rapalas, etc.) The last two years we've also done really well with Smack Tackle's Giz3, Giz4s and Smack Jacks, I've really enjoyed the forum since I've joined and I notice that alot of you do really well jigging with jigs rigged with Super Flukes and spoons but it appears that you all are using them mostly in the winter and mid-summer months. Are there any lures you would recommend for mid-May? We generally concentrate on top water at night but also like to get out to fish and explore the lake early mornings and late afternoon. Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide!

Beyond what you've listed, here's a few lures I use that time of year:
Storm thunderstick Yo Zuri Crystal Minnow Swamp Monkey Jighead with fluke Storm Swimbaits Heddon Super Spook A-rig?
I need to get some Smack Tackle lures, but I'm too poor.
I wouldn't discount the daytime bite in mid May..especially if it's going to rain. You may get into some major schools of breaking fish on the lower end.

I really like the look of those Smack Jacks - just can't bring myself to pull the trigger on a $25 lure that I'm going to bang into the rip-rap at night......

I know what you mean about the price of the Smack Jacks ($25). However, I used the same one for 8 nights at Cumberland, beating it off the rocks and cliffs and it held up enough to catch fish every night. In fact, every striper my brother-in-law and I caught that week at night came on a Smack Jack. This year I will have a couple extra with me for SML. However, you really do need to replace the rear treble hook. The one on it is a little to big and occasionally gets caught on the tail or catches on the front treble.

What colors do you think works best for the Giz3&4? Do you get alewives color for the smack jacks? Cant believe I'm contemplating a $25 lure! Between hunting, fishing, my wife and two daughters no wonder I never have cash in my pocket!

I got some in Gizzard Grey and maybe its Green Pearl. Todd @ Smack does some really nice lures.
I've not dropped the coin on the Smack Jack, but if anyone is wanting to know what to get me for my birthday coming up in a month...... ;D

Kenny, if you take up striper fishing big time, (and you will) very expensive. May have to give up the wife and kids. lol just kidding. ;D Fishing lures are built and designed to catch fishermen. Just get you some tried and true thundersticks.

At Lake Cumberland in KY, I've had the most luck with the Green Pearl Gizz-3 & 4, shallow dive. Got both stripers and some really nice walleye. I've also done well with the Black Pearl and White Giz-4's. Just tried the Smack Jack last spring for the first time at Cumberland. My brother-in-law and I used the Green Backs for a week and caught every striper at night on the Green Backs. The Smack Jacks totally outperformed every other lure the other 4 guys in our group and we used that week, including redfins, thundersticks, crystal minnows, etc. I know they are expensive at $25 a pop, but the success we had with them has me hooked and they seem to hold up well. Used the same one all week and I'll use it again this spring at SML, although I will have a few backups in my box.

It appears that PA Ken ought to get commission from Smack Jacks, All year long I throw my loose change in an old minnow bucket I have in the garage and about this time of year I place orders for more lures that I probably have twenty of already. Well after reading the thread from Ken, I spent $25 for a lure, Ken this damn thing better catch fish or I'll catch hell from my crew of Striper hunters!

I used the giz4 alot last year with good success. It will cause you to catch the dreaded green fish though.
