Well I’ve gotten a rod and some tying materials for some perch flies, so I’m going for it. I’ve got a hard and soft head version of these minnow flies. The hard head version floats/suspends and can be walked like a dog on the retrieve. It’s an airy presentation and I hope the perch won’t be able to resist. The soft head version is lead wrapped on the hook shank and doesn’t trap air under since there is no epoxy shell. It has more of a jighead action when stripped, up down up down in the nose. It looks nice too in the water. They are about 2.5” long tied on a #2 short shank. I’m hoping they’ll be effective morning and evening when the perch are up along the points in less than 10’ as it’s tough to target them in those situations. Soft head shown.

Sweet job! If you haven't already put some fly tying cement on the thread behind the hook eye, do so. Clear fingernail polish will work in a pinch. You will be surprised how fast fish will pick your flies apart with those small teeth. These weighted eyes also help to get your fly down deeper and are made as small as 1/16 of an oz. Also start saving your squirrel and deer tails as well as you turkey wings and small feathers. Saves a lot of money on supplies.

maybe youre just referring to fly fishing(im not sure), but i dont find targeting perch difficult at all. night crawler on a drop shot will catch plenty. i use gold aberdeen eagle claw hooks or small dropshot/splitshot gamakatsu hooks. if they arent biting that then they just arent there

nice work! especially from someone who's retired from fishing. I know right. It’s tough when your wife and daughter want to fish too. Though, comparing time spent on the water this year with the last ~15-20 years of my life, I might as well be retired. 😂
