So, I'm officially slated to head to the lake all day Saturday, taking my 7yr old son and his friend and friend's dad (~11am to ~8pm). Figured that white perch would be a perfect target for the kiddos! We'll be in my Bass Buggy, which has pretty good electronics... We'll put in at State Park and fish the dam / Witcher / Craddock Crk area... What do these buggers look like on the locator? During the day, do you recommend canvassing deeper water off of primary points, looking for balls of them on downscan (presumably, they'd display like shad). Plan is to bring a bunch of nightcrawlers and Mister Twisters -- but if other presentations would be more promising, then please let me know. GAME ON!!!

I find them best in wide, flat, clean bottomed coves. Look in about 20 feet of water give or take. Won’t be bunched too tight. Look for a steady “carpet” of fish in the bottom 5 feet of the column. Vertical drop shot with #4 hooks. First hook about a foot off the bottom, second hook a foot to a foot and a half above the first. Don’t have to gob the worm, just cover the hook.

I've updated the original post in this thread with the details of the competition. Time to get perch jerkin!

Ok guys I am researching, gearing up, getting the kids excited about the perch jerk. I know nothing about them so any help is appreciated. I would love to be able to target them on the lower end of the lake. BW side, crazy horse to the dam. RR side the State park to the dam. What is going to be the call sign? I saw where someone suggested a pool noodle. I think it would be a lot of fun to be able to team up when possible and wipe some of these fish out. I hope to have Craigs (CrMiller) fillet knife wore out by the end of summer. LOL

Ok guys as like most of you I'm primarily in to striper fishing til the warm weather sits in then some night fishing accoinsanly, really like the idea of the white Perch jerk the kids will love this have caught some while fishing by accident but have not fished here for them intentionally, in the past fishing for white bass and white Perch at Kerr lake I would use a three way swivel with a buck Perry spoon, with a rooster tail. Always had great luck this way at Kerr lake wasn't sure if anyone else had tried anything similar.

I’ve tried it and have used it to locate schools, but I’ve never been able to load the boat this way.

Ok, so is the orange swim noodle displayed somewhere stove waterline going to be the “bat signal”? Meaning “I’m on perch, come join me”.

I have a rules question. I often have my daughter, FIL, or other friends with me when perch fishing. Do I have to hold my catch separate to enter? Can I turn in fish under their name? How do I handle a cooler full of fish caught by multiple people?

Just want to be clear. I don’t want to see 46 years of effort at maintaining a good reputation go down the drain by cheating accusations in a perch fishing contest!! Lol

I wanted to ask the question on the 8 inch minimum isn’t this a fish that we would like to remove from the lake I would hate to see everybody throwing them back in the water that are less than 8 inches.

It ain’t hardly enough meat to fillet off an 8”er. The smaller ones make good cut bait for cats, and also good garden fertilizer. Personally I keep them all and they get used.

John’s spot on - given Club members will be cleaning these for the fish fry it needs to be worth the work - but that does not mean you can’t keep the little ones for various purposes....
