Anything below 20ft I’m throwing the taped net. I remember a year ago in campers the dollar bills were stacked up at 20ft and guys were pulling 1-2 shad a throw. I had a 8ft 1.5lb taped net and averaged 20-30 sometimes 50 a throw. I gladly shared the extras and remember talking to several guys about the advantages of a taped net. Like everyone else said though if I had to pick one net it wouldn’t be a taped net when they are shallow.

I think you guys have summed up my experience...more trouble then the are worth. I found going a little larger on the mesh and maybe a touch heavier on the weight outweighed (no-pun) the taped net. It just seemed to grab more crap from the bottom as well and as already said tended to get heavy real quick...Nothing like throwing a heavy wet sail in 20 degree weather...but to each their own. I am glad to see some have had success with them..

Taped net will get it done in deep water when a traditional net won't. BUT I'm no net man.....I need to work on my skills..............

I've been considering the same net (Betts Sea Green 8'), but in the "Deep Hole" version, which has a ribbon sewn along the bottom. Also, I believe that the entire Sea Green series is 1.2lbs vs the Old Salt's 1lb. I think the specs on the Sea Green series look very promising for use on SML. Also, on a whelm, I ordered one of the pink Offshore Angler nets from BPS, which are on sale currently... 8', 1/2" mesh, 1lb. Should be here tomorrow. FishON, did you end up buying a new net? I'll be eager to hear your thoughts. The Offshore Angler net I'd ordered from BPS arrived... I've yet to use it on the water -- throws okay in the yard, although my rookie skills are a limiting factor (I still pretty much look like I'm trying to shot-put a wet sleeping bag). Net was $112 on sale... I feel kinda meh about it... Pros: 1. looks cool (pink netting is different - pink mono is nearly invisible 10' underwater), 2. came with a nice Offshore Angler logo'ed bucket, 3. everything is fashioned nicely with good knotting, and 4. lead and lead-line is FANTASTIC (weights are tied off nicely, and I don't know why, but this net simply DOES NOT tangle at the bottom). Cons: 1. not sure it's really a $112-$140 net, 2. splicing on the hand-line could have been done much neater, and 3. blue plastic horn is CHEAPO (I had to de-burr the mold marks) -- horrible piece of Chinese crap. Like, I said, it's meh... I'm sure that it'll catch bait and serve its purpose -- but I typically research things to death and obsess about every specification, and then purchase the gear and feel an emotional attachment to it. This net isn't particularly special to me yet.

Got my fitec taped net out for the first time Friday evening. Smacked some gizzards down at 38’. I am a believer in the taped net.

Cool screen shots. Like how the mongos are highlighted in color!
Was bait hard to locate?

Strange, I was bidding on a FITEC taped 5/8 10' on eBay a couple three weeks ago. Was out bid at the last 15 seconds. I should've bid more, I guess. I need all the help that I can get.
