Me and a buddy came down to the lake for our last hurrah of the year. Fishing was slow, but what fish we caught were solid for the most part.
12/20
Fished Indian Point Area & Stoney Creek. Water temps 50-51 degrees. Air temps low 50’s. Slight wind. Had a tough day. Caught 4 fish early. Then one later in the day. For a total of 5. All 5 were Largemouth with big Shad stuffed bellies. Everything I caught was under/near docks in 10-12’ of water. Or around rocky points or isolated rock. Caught 1 skipping a 3/8 oz green pumpkin/orange jig under a dock. The other 4 all came on a Strike King KVD 1.5 Flat sudde crankbait. My buddy got skunked. Biggest one of the day was around 5 lbs.
12/21
Fished Grimes Creek, Beaver Dam, Becky’s, and another Creek I don’t know the name of. Water temps 50-51 degrees. Air temps High 40’s. Very little wind and fairly sunny. Caught 5 again. 2 chunk smallmouth and 3 big gut Largemouth. Caught them in same areas as day before. 3rd cast of the morning, I hooked and landed a 5+ lb smallie in a Megabass Vision 110 + 1 jerkbait in between 2 docks near rip rap at the mouth of a Creek. Then caught a 3.5 lb Largemouth skipping the jig from the day before under a dock. Landed 2 Largemouth pretty quickly in 5 casts on rocky points. Both around 2 lbs. then caught another 2.5 lb smallie on the KVD 1.5 Flat near the mouth of a Creek off a rip rap bank. Once again, my buddy blanked.
12/22
Fished down near the dam and around the Craddock Creek & Cedar Keys areas. Water temps 51-53. Air temp low 50’s. Wind 5-10 mph early. Then slacked off. We caught a total of 8. 6 Largemouth, 1 smallmouth, and one of everyone’s favorite, a nice striper.
3rd cast of the morning I landed a nice 2 lb smallie on my Megabass jerkbait off riprap at the mouth of a Creek. About 5 minutes later, my buddy landed his new personal best, a 3.75 lb Largemouth (he’s new to fishing) on a SPRO Rockcrawler crankbait off a dock that was on the point at the mouth of a Creek. Went up in the Creek, my buddy landed a nice 2.25 lb Largemouth on a Rapala Shad Rap jerkbait in silver/chartreuse. I skipped my jig under a dock in the back of the creek and caught a 2 lb LM. Coming out of the back of the Creek, the wind was blowing hard. So I put my Flat sided crankbait down due to inability to cast it in to wind. Threw my Megabass jerkbait off the end of a tree top near a secondary point. Got a little tug. So I pulled in to it. Was using a 7’ Med Spinning rod and spinning reel with 8 lb line. At first the fish was coming in half way easy. Thought it was a good sized bass. He made his appearance and low and behold, was about a 33-35” striper. Once he saw the boat, it was on. After about 8 minutes of drag peeling action on my little spinning set up, we got him in the boat. Gave him a kiss, snapped a pic, and turned him back lose to fight another day. We proceeded to catch a couple more decent Largemouth on our crankbaits and jerkbaits. Headed in and called it a day around 2 PM. We found 53.5 degree water and never got a bite in that area. Blew my mind. But a great 3 days on the lake. We stayed at Westlake Water Front Inn. $60/night for weeknights. Can’t beat it. Enjoyed the nice December weather, the lake, and hanging out with a good friend. We landed every fish we hooked. Enjoyed it. We ended up tied 4-4. Total for the trip. I caught 14 he caught 4. We had 3 fish over 4 lbs and a couple over 3. I’ll take that for winter. Tight line guys. I would post some pics, but have no idea how to post pics on here!!
