The replacements will bring the markers into compliance with U.S. Coast Guard requirements. Appalachian recently changed the lights on three lateral marks—sometimes known locally as “channel markers”—from white to green. The lights use a quick-flash rate. The marks designate the entrance to respective channels or rivers that flow into the lake. Lights have been changed on lateral marks B1 (Blackwater), BR1 (Little Bull Run), and BU1 (Bull Run). White lights will be changed out to green at other channel entrances following additional Coast Guard approvals. Lake residents, boaters and visitors can view additional information about power generation and other activities at the Smith Mountain Project on www.SmithMountainProject.com and on Facebook. Smith Mountain Project is a 636-megawatt pumped storage hydroelectric facility in southwest Virginia on the Roanoke River that utilizes an upper reservoir (Smith Mountain Lake) and a lower reservoir (Leesville Lake). Water stored in Smith Mountain Lake first passes through turbine-generators in the powerhouse to produce electricity and is discharged into Leesville Lake. From there, some water is released through the Leesville Dam or pumped back into Smith Mountain. The project was built and is operated by Appalachian Power. ###
