We are just over a month away from our 1st SML event of the season. This year's event will be almost two weeks later than last year so we should see even better conditions than last season in terms of lower water temps and aggressive fish. Looking forward to seeing some good fish caught and registered on the measuring boards for the competition. Make sure to pre-register for the event over at www.StriperMafia.com/registration. Entry fee is only $100/team (up to 4 people per team) with the optional $25 big-fish pot. As before we will be having the youth overlay competition, a series-long Ladies competition for longest fish with a nice prize from Haywood Jewlers, and our SML-based points series for Team of the Year - have a really nice prize which we will announce very soon - but you want to be in the running for the series.... Still working to lock down the tournament location for November, but it will be over on the Roanoke side somewhere in the vicinity of the Halesford Bridge.

We've made it a "tradition" of using our tournaments as a mechanism to also do some good for our community. Over the past two seasons we've raised money for the Red Cross to use with the Appomattox Tornado victims; one of the local fire departments in honor of Danny Foster / Cornelia Gale; for the family of little Chloe who was battling cancer at Duke; for Make-A-Wish in memory of Jerry Dalton/Rockfish ands we've collected toys for the local Christmas toy collection program and peanut-butter for the backpack lunch programs (and I feel like I'm forgetting one in there somewhere).
We plan to keep the this tradition alive with the Striper Mafia Tournament Series as we move into our 3rd Season. We are currently selling limited-edition shirts to help raise funds for the Freedom Alliance Scholarship fund which provides scholarships to the children of wounded, fallen or MIA soldiers.
With our November tournament falling on Veterans Day, we wanted to do something else to honor our Veterans. I want to thank one of our tournament participants, a veteran himself, for a great idea that we collect items for "Care Packages" to be sent to our deployed troops currently serving overseas - as a small token to let them know that we appreciate them and are thinking of them.
At the November tourney we are asking each team to bring items for one of these care-boxes, and to also bring $15-$20 in cash that would be used to go to the shipping cost to get the box overseas.
We will ship the items USPS, and there are two options - a 11x9 and a 12x12 box (not sure the depth off hand) - shipping costs, regardless of weight, is $13.60 and $16.85. We're asking each team to contribute $15-$20 per team/box as I expect we will have some extra items that will let us pack some additional care packages and this will help cover the additional shipping costs for those - or we'll use any extra to purchase some items to include.
Our current thinking is that we will setup a couple of tables at the post-tournament check-in and all the items brought can be sorted & distributed across the boxes - we will work with the USPS to get a supply of the boxes on hand - then you all can participate in this together, by helping to pack the boxes - I'd like to include some pictures of the group from the tournament and such, and going to get some note-cards that personal notes can be written and included into the boxes.
Of course this is totally on a volunteer basis and if you want to just bring some items below, or provide $ for shipping of one, or even a partial donation - or even just be there and help - it's all cool. We just felt this would be a great way that we could honor our veterans that have done so much for us - and especially those that are away from their home and families now, serving our Country overseas.
We'll remind everyone on this coming up to the tourney as well as in the e-mail communications, but we wanted to put the word out now so you could start planning, doing some shopping, etc......
Below you'll find a listing of the types of items which are recommended and OK'ed to include/send:
Personal hygiene items(unscented whenever possible) Disposable razors (men's and women's) Chap sticks Body wash, lotion, face wash, mouth wash, deodorant, Q-tips, shampoo, conditioner Foot powder Feminine products (unscented whenever possible): Small packs of napkins and tampons Female version of body wash, lotion, razors, face wash, mouth wash, deodorant, Q-tips, hair de-tangler, face moisturizer, shampoo, conditioner Small grooming kits Sunscreen Magazines (clean content) Cards, letters, group photos (we want them to know real people did this for them) Beef jerky Hard candy Gum – all flavors Hand Sanitizer Cookies, crackers Candy Bars Rice Krispy Treats Slim Jims Spam Easy Kraft Macroni & Cheese or similar products.
