I know Tyler is using bait, I seen his bait rods in his pictures today.... ;D
Most are jigging now because it is a pain to catch bait. They can be caught, just takes more time to do so being so deep this time of year. A good heavy throw net in the 10'-12' range with some extra rope attached for the deeper depths will help. Also a good sonar to find the bait schools to throw on.

I've taken some bait past couple trips, but it's not doing any better than jigging. In fact yesterday, jigging out did it at least 5:1. I haven't pulled boards but I think that would do best being they are staying scattered. They don't want down lines even though they're deep..they'll shoot up though.
Alewives are easy to catch by the way at night. Shallow or deep lights should be good. On the deep lights..if they're there on sonar and you can't net any, block the light with your boat for a minute and that'll make em shoot up some. Then just throw off the side of your boat. Shallow lights have been loaded pretty good but avg size alewife is smaller.
