Caught my PB smallmouth at my first stop. She clobbered a DT16 as it ticked off of the end of a laydown. Typical SM crankbait hit - knocked slack in my line then ate it. And I mean she ate it. Got the full SM experience, too - about a 3-4' jump, several runs as I worked her back to the boat, dodged my net at every attempt to land her. Had a couple nice keeper LM and a solid keeper spot to go with the brown fish. Jig and fluke also produced. Wood was the ticket today.
Observations: 1) Water is gin clear downlake, a little stained ~midlake up. Still have 3-4' of viz. 2) Water temps were surprisingly low. Saw 75* at the state park ramp, 74 midlake (across from Peak Creek), and 75 up near the bridge. It did warm a little bit (up to 78*). Winds later in the day prevented any major warming. 3) All of my fish came off of wood. Laydowns, stumps, brush all produced. Wood on a point was special. The fish were relating to the end of the wood. 4) I marked a few baitfish pods here and there but not enuff activity to build a pattern to it. Lots of bait out in the main river channel. Most of this was at or near the mouths of creeks and cuts. Lots of hybrid or striper activity but it was deep (+40'). 5) Boat traffic was light. The cooler wx chased some away. Think the kids went back to school last week so that prob took a few more away. Good things.
Have never thrown a DT16 bait before today. Ordered some for SML on a recommendation from a friend. The Ike series have superb paint jobs - very realistic, durable finishes. Ran true right out of the box, gave me every bit of 16' of running depth. I've used the DT6s and 10s in the past. Will def expand my inventory of the DT16s.
Headed to SML next weekend.
