I know some guys in TN that don't use levelwinds as they have had the levelwind lock up when a fish is screaming drag and lose them good fish - bigger fish of course. Just have to learn to use your thumb to level the line..... and have your guest on the boat do the same.

The Cortez looks nice. A lot like my daiwa sl20sh! Like mike said it takes some getting use to guiding the line but a non-level wind will help your casting when it comes to distance. The surf drum fisherman at the coast use non-level winds on heaver 12-15' rods! And casting 200 yards is a joke to them! I've see them sling 8oz so far off pier you never see it hit water! Level wind the wire guide has to Stay in the same spot, or follow the spool back an forth. Both will slow a cast! My choice. The non level wind would be on all my rods! Catfish or striper! Most guys live by Abu! Much better than a cheep mega cast bass pro reel, but they not all that! Gear ratio!! Old school penn 4:1, Abu 5:1, Cortez-slosh 6-7:1 I lose more weight fishing with my penn cause I can't wind fast enough to keep it off the bottom, my slosh it skims across the top. Penn jigmaster 500 broke all kind of fish records in the 60s Non-level wind!! Jigmasters still selling for 50-60$ on eBay Greenfish fishing reels don't count!! They are used to catch bait!! Line counter reel if it is tec specific. Say for down-line fishing, or pulling u-rigs! Normal people can pull from reel to first eye on rod and call it a foot and a half!

All good points. I think I am going to pick up 2 of the cortez's and see how I like them. I did like the retreave rate of 43" a turn. I was doing some reading on them and some guys like the narrow deep spool which holds lots of line but easy to lay the line since the narrow spool. Also the fact that it had all stainless steal gears instead of plastic. Non level wind isnt a problem for me as thats what i use on my surf rods, was just wondering with pulling boards. About the guest, well I guess that just means its hands off my preaty rods unless you know how to use them

Well decided to go with the Abu 6500 C3's with power handle. I figured it would be best to have level wind since I am tring to get the miss's to get out an fish with me and it wont be long till my little one will be out fishing with me ;D now if I can just find the time to work on the rods

anybody use the Penn 209m? I know they are old school looking, heck they been around for a long time. From what I have read on them they are really reliable and quite the power house of a real. Not to mention I can pick them up for $40 each. Yea, I collect old Penn reels and love them. I'm always looking for more. My Uncle taught me to fish with them back in the 50s when we used to go for Flounder, Fluke, Blues, and Stripers from Cape Cod to the Jersey Shore. I had two for several years and them I found 4 more in the scrap iron pile when I was a crane operator for Cycle Systems so I stared collecting them. They are real work horses.

You know a lot of people from what I've read on here are not really in favor of Penn reels, then again I could be wrong but you know I use the Penn 209 and Penn Special Senator 113H2 and I love it! And I'm still adding to my arsenal of reel and rod combos.

I love old school! I have about 30 Penns from 180s, 209s, 285s, 65s, 67s, up to 114-Hs, 12/0, 14/0, 15/0 and 115s for big game. Most of them have an adjustable bearing cap on the left side that will let line out at most any rate you want without the clicker on.

Cool, ya I just got my friend into Striper big time this Summer, he recently bought a Senator 114H2 and let me just say its reel nice!! Plus within another week or so I will most likely be purchasing a Penn Squall 40LH, one of Penn's newest reel series!
