We were out crappie fishing this morning and it was dead crappies in every creek and cove that we went into. Some were fresh dead, and others were quite old. This was mid-upper Roanoke.
I don't have much to report. They weren't on docks and very few on brush today. Muddy water probably made it tough to see the jigs. Got some dinks and that was it.

Disturbing. How many you think saw total?

Probably 30 or very close to it. Put it this way, everywhere we stopped we saw 4-6 dead ones just floating around. No telling how many we didn't see up on the bank. I counted 6 along the bank at our community ramp alone.

I seen one in my cove b41. Thought it was just random.

Might want to report it. Let them decide if it's insignificant. I'd report it, but that's me.

I've searched online a bit and there's a thing called "spawning stress".
The ones I saw didn't look injured and I have a hard time believing they were angler related deaths.
Otherwise I have no clue

Man that would suck. I'm sure glad humans don't get that! Poor crappie.

Suffered, but never died.

I've seen fish (crappie) die-offs after spawning before - that very well could be the answer. It might also be a contaminant. With all this rain I'm sure stuff has washed into the lake. Def worth reporting to VDGIF.

Many, many years ago I was a funeral director working in Ney York City for a large funeral service company. I was dispatched to a mid town hotel to transfer the remains of a deceased who had passed away in a room there....turns out the deceased was Nelson Rockefeller...past Governor, Presidential candidate, famous for the 1964 Convention pic of him with his middle finger high and tight....anyway...turns out he didn't die alone....there was a lady with him when he went to meet his maker.....guess he died from "spawn stress"......

Now THAT is funny. Spawn stress - too rich.
