I recently trashed the lower unit on my suzuki 250. Was running about 30mph in the middle of the channel and hit something hard enough to kick the motor all the way up. The engine stalled immediately and would not turn over. After performing some redneck diagnostics to include sticking a screwdriver down each cylinder, it would only turn over with the lower unit removed.
Long story short I was instructed by progressive to take the boat to an authorized dealer where an adjuster would come by and inspect the damage. Nothing visible except prop dings.
To my surprise he showed up the same day and called me that night to tell me he was gonna write a check for the lower unit replacement, prop recon, and some fiberglass damage that was more than likely not caused by the latest incident.
He said if the check doesn't cover everything let him know and he will do another inspection and add a supplement to the claim to get me what I need.
Zero deductable now since I've been with them for 7 years. No hassles no BS.
I signed up for thier sign and glide policy which covers any type of towing everywhere except Florida. $30 per year is a lot cheaper than seatow
Just letting you in case you are looking at boat insurance.

Thanks for posting this up! Would you mind sharing the cost of the lower unit. Also, where is the work being completed in order for progressive to cover. I just purchased insurance for my boat this past week. This is my first boat so I am very new to the insurance side of this. The 3 biggest reasons why i purchased the insurance: 1. In case of a catastrophe. I also thought if I didnt have insurance to cover a catastrophe my boaters license could be revoked. 2. To cover any large expense with my engine. 3. To cover the loss of my electronics and trolling motor. Here are my coverages and im interested with others thoughts on to much in an area or not enough. Thanks again for the post arch and glad to read you will be back on the water soon.

Thanks again for the post arch and glad to read you will be back on the water soon. PT New lower unit $3308 shipped to my door. I will install myself. I had to take it to a authorized Suzuki dealer to get it inspected by the adjuster but I did not need to agree to have the work done by anyone. They just sent me the check. I pay $355 a year for my coverage. Don't have the policy in front of me but I have set amount for the boat for total loss not market value. I also have a set amount for electronics which I believe is $10k. Keep in mind my coverage includes unlimited soft grounding recoverys and tow. I dont pay the tow driver it's all done by progressive. Where I ride now this is huge. You get what you pay for and I believe I'm paying a premium (no pun intended) for my coverage. Let me know if you need more info. I'd be happy to share.

Like Arch, I'm with Progressive for my boats. I'm glad to hear they treated you well. I thankfully haven't used mine yet.
My boats are also insured for a total loss. Basically if it is totaled, they give me what it would cost to replace it with a new one, not what it's worth at the time of the claim. I put a ~35k policy on it to cover boat, motor, and trailer plus 10k for electronics and fishing equipment. I pay somewhere around $325 a year, and it's been the same since 2011.
Do you know what broke in the lower unit? I did the same thing with my first real boat at moormans, hit so hard it knocked the cowling off. Wish I'd had an airbag that day lol. That engine had about 5 hours on it at the time. Luckily it was only a bent prop shaft and destroyed prop.

That personal property at 4K may not be enough. If you go out to your boat and start adding up everything you might find out how much you really have in just rods and miscellaneous tackle. I had my truck broken into and emptied years ago, they got all my rods and reels (line on reels needs to be figured in), all of my soft and hard tackle boxes and my first LCD graph fish finder plus other non fishing equipment. I didn't think I had that much stuff dollar wise but when I started making a list I was over 4k in the rods and reels and I don't think I really had a good estimate for the tackle. I was with an Insurance company that will go unnamed that tried to shortchange me and they asked for an awful lot of documentation. I couldn't provide receipts but ended up having to get prices on everything I was trying to get replaced...It was a real POA.

Glad they covered u with no hassle. I had the same thing happen to me at hopewell one weekend and had 2 cracks in the fiberglass transom so when got home called state farm and told them so they to me to go get a esment so I took it to sherm's boat repair up near the lake and he talked to the insurance company. And said the transom was good just need to be reglased and redo the gusset s on the back. So the insurance company came out and said that hitting something didnt cause the cracks so they refuse to pay. So I was going to pay sherm's out of pocket to fix it and a month went by and I went up there and my boat was still seting in same place I left it so I said. F this and hooked to it and pulled out and brought it home and pulled the motor and fixed it my self picked it up on Wednesday and was done and back ready for the water on Sunday. So. State farm insurance. Better watch out for them I had 2 boats covered tro them. I called and drop it on both boats. Hell no need to pay for something u going to pay out of pocket for anyway. Ok rant over. Glad they covered ur deal

I second the Progressive. I recently hit a rock and took out my LU and had some significant hull damage. They totaled the boat but gave me 1100 less for what I paid for the boat 4 years ago. 134.00 a year was well worth it. No hassles.

Ok I'm back in the water. Within 10 minutes of the lower unit break in I tested it thoroughly by taking off some paint in the sand. I can't seem to figure out the ever changing sand bars down here. Fortunately there are very few rocks around here.
