Is this legal? What about sunfish? I have often thought that if you cut the fins of a sunfish, they would swim like a crippled fish and therefore attach a strike by a striper. I have never tried it because I do not know if it is legal.

If you line-catch sunfish you can use them as bait. Not sure on the largemouth but I'd not use them out of respect for SuperStriper I know guys on SML that have had some success downlining them in the summer, and also read of folks elsewhere clipping the dorsal fin so that they are a little easier for the striper to swallow so you can get a hook-up.

Sounds like it might be worth a try. You can never find a new way of doing something if you don't give it a try.

Was talking with the Game Officer at the boating class Saturday, when a guy came up and ask him about using bluegills, crappie for bait, game warden said as long as you catch them on hook and line you can use them, but you can not use a net. Bass are the same only have to be bigger to keep, might take a large fish to take on of them but it sure would be fun if something did take a 12" bass.

Good evening guys. I too was wondering what was legal bait. The game laws state that bass and crappie can not be used as bait. It states that no game fish could be used as bait. (certain laws vary) It also classifies sunfish/perch as a game fish. I called the game commission office in Forest this year and was told that the sunfish/perch was was the only game fish that could be used. I like to use them for bass and catfish. Each officer may have a different story. I hope this is a bit helpful.

Just lucky for striper bass dont get that big. To each his own, I love bass fishing myself, but a smaller small mouth is about the best flathead bait there is.

I think srtiper has a better flavor than largemouth. Depends a lot on the cook, first striper I ever ate I didn't know ya had to cut the red meat out, tasted like a batter dipped mud ball. Yeah it's hard to beat any fish fried up with hush puppies and slaw. Some the best fish I ate we some saucer sized bluegill outta briery creek, Got on some big ones a couple years back during the spawn, had 25 that were 11 + inches, so fat I had to lay them on thier side to get the hook out, couldn't palm them. Man all this talkin about eatin fish makin me hungry, Gotta go catch me a couple fillets.

Oh by the way the best size for bait would be 8-10 inches.
