I appreciate all the information that was just posted here a couple of weeks ago about Nets. I currently have two 10'Nets that I've had for the last few years, they are not from Tim Wade. They might be fitec or betts. They are 3/8 inch and half inch mesh. Probably around 1.5 weights. They're not getting the job done in deep water, 20 foot plus. I'm considering following the advice of yam and going with a 3/4 mesh for gizzards. But to catch ale wives I might be buying a fi Tec 12 foot half-inch mesh as well, again for deeper water. My question is, has anybody tried a 12-foot net with the tape? Fitec sells this. The tape is a course to help keep the net open as it descends through the water column. Just wondering if anybody has experience using one, thanks for the input

I have several nets, some for back ups and some because the provide a benefit for different needs. The tape net that I use is a 10 foot - 1 inch - 1.2 Lb. Tim Wade net with ribbon sewn in. It has a 40 foot hand line. I first used it at Thanksgiving and I was able to get large bait at 35 feet. I have another net exactly the same but at 1.5 lbs. and without the ribbon. On the same day under the same circumstances, that net came up empty.
I do not know the difference in drop or closure rate for the 3/4 inch compared to the one inch, however, if I was doing it again, the only one inch net that I would own would be the one with the ribbon. It's not often that you need to go that deep for bait but when you do it is nice to have. Catching smaller bait with the one inch net is a pain and you will gill a ton of medium sized gizzards. it almost like throwing a 5/8 at a light for alewives. It is a mess that can be avoided if you have all the right tools.

I find myself casting in 25 to 35 feet of water a lot and like I said, that Nets that I have are just not doing the job. You can actually see on my gen 3 how the bait moves out of the way as the net hits the bottom! So thanks for the info and if anybody else is using one, let me know what you think of a three quarter or 1 inch with tape, thanks

Get the 3/4. It's tougher and won't get Xmas treed. With tape, mesh size is not a big factor in openness. However, you do need good weight to make the tape work. 1.5 lb is a good bet.
With this being said, a 12 foot, 1.5 lb taped net will be a serious workout. I would do the 10 foot.

I have a taped 8ft 5/8" Fitec and it sucks pulling up from the depths. You may want to get a winch for the 12 footer or trick a buddy into pulling it up for you.

Thank you all for the feedback, now I'm scared! I'm tired of throwing in 25 feet of water over and over again and watching the Bait scatter. might be worth starting out with a 10-footer. I'll let you know how it goes

Just my opinion...get the 12'er, no tape, less weight and learn the shrimpers method to throw it.

jt - did you ever end up pulling the trigger on a taped net? Sorry took me awhile to answer, I appreciate your interest but I never did buy it because I didn't have the mullah. I will be buying it however , even at Lake Anna I am getting really frustrated with casting for bait at 25 feet deep. I was casting my current net at Stubb's Bridge and I pulled up a massive chunk of metal that ripped a nice 5 foot hole at the lead line. Haven't had time to fix it. Do you currently own a net with tape? Wondering how you like it if you do
