Mward, sorry, I had not seen that you had responded to this. Your points are well taken. I also agree with what big gun said and I think it's time for me to start keeping a log. It is true that when I came to the lake a year ago I was hoping to get more information on gizzard Shad but the fact is that you guys gave me just enough info to make it interesting. Truth is you need to get out there and find your own way, the guidance that you guys gave me was great. You told me where to look more or less as far as finding the bait. Truth is, if it were super easy, we simply would not do it. I remember 30 years ago, I went camping with my mom in North Carolina and we tried to go fishing for some trout in a stream. Of course all the fish were stocked and there were just too many people fishing the same river. We decided the hell with it and we went to a trout farm that had a very small pond and all you had to do was throw in a tiny little lure and pretty much every cast would land you a fish that you would then pay for. It was fun for about 5 minutes. It's because catching big striper is a challenge that we do it. If every time we went out we caught 10 monsters or 20 monsters we would probably give it up. I realize that is how all of Life Works. I've had an absolute blast building my own bait tanks and right now I'm redoing the entire deck on a 1992 24-foot playcraft deck boat. I'm learning all kinds of stuff that I didn't know. And when I get out on the water it will have a lot more meaning to know that I built the deck that I'm standing on. I'm planning to take that boat down to the keys this summer. And I will be sure to report the fishing that I do to you guys. Thanks again for the inspiration

As far as the fishing logs go, it's a great idea to keep one for the simple fact that it's worth $20. I turned in the short one I had from this past year to Dan Wilson thanks Mward and unexpectedly had a check for $20 show up in the mail. I then took that $20 and put it in my membership for the Smith Mountain Lake Striper club. Dan is an awesome guy who emailed me a wealth of knowledge about the lake for just sending in my log information. Also I read the post about the forums, and Shadslinger you seem to be as elite and as good a guy as your pops. I remember back in Nov. right after thanksgiving I posted a report of fishing all morning with no action in the cold and wind to find a PM from Shadslinger recommending me a place for the evening that put my biggest striper in the boat at 32". I had my wife and 4 year old son with me and till this day that is all he talks about is that huge fish he caught. That has been my best weekend fishing thanks to a PM sent on the forum.

I appreciate that bushwacker. I am definitely far from elite. There are many way better fisherman around here than me. I've actually struggled this year to put fish in the boat. I've had a few here really help me along the way and I always try to help others when I can. Fishing to me really is about allot more than just a fish. Looking forward to meeting you out on the BW sometime.

And I'm glad that you agree with it. Got to tell you that it's nice to have you guys to talk to on this board about all aspects of fishing and being out there in nature. There is so much I have yet to learn about fishing that it boggles the mind and it excites me to no end . Can you believe I have not caught a cobia yet? I have yet to catch a mahi mahi out of the deep ocean ! I can't wait! I've never caught a Musky ! List goes on and on . I'm so lucky . So much to look forward to . And I also have to say that I have gotten some amazing mileage out of this thread. I bet a lot of people here want to see this one go away! Thanks again
