Can some of the more experienced anglers post what size hooks u like to use depending on the size of bait?
Small ales to large blue backs?
Peanuts to Mongos?
Use mostly boards so predominantly use j's and octopus but if u want to throw in correct sizes for circles for a few down lines then good on u!
Thanks in advance!

I thought someone else would have helped you out by now, so here's my opinion. I see no value whatsoever in J hooks other than bottom fishing for stripers. Many tests have shown that circles get more hook ups and are more humane. Many opinions on here so this will probably start again. Much data and discussion in the archives as well. Bait/hook all circles
Small ales--1/0-2/0 Med ales 2/0 Large ales/large 3/0-4/0 Peanut gizzards 2/0-3/0 Money makers 3/0-4/0 big gizzards up to 10 inches 5/0 Large gizzards over 10 6-7/0 No matter planers, floats or down lines I use the same size for the bait I have. Remember these fish turn the big bait around and take it down their throat head first. It is impossible to take a decent sized gizzard down their throat tail first with all those fins sticking out etc. Now I've caught quite a few very big fish over the years on 1/0 circle hooks, if you buy good quality hooks you'll never have one broken off as I've read on here. I have never had a hook break on me. When they get rusty in the trash. I like Gamasutka or however the hell it's spelled and Owner hooks. Hopes this helps. John

Lots of folks probably away from the keyboard the last few days which makes a good reply like the above tougher (dang phone keyboards lead to too many auto-correct errors ) I pretty much agree with John's hook size to bait size..... one thing I'll say is that if you are using circle hooks you tend to need to go a bit bigger size for size than you would for an "J" or Octopus (not Octopus Circle) style hook to ensure there is enough gap between the shank and the point to get hooked up - at least on bigger baits. The circle vs "j" debate will rage on I used to use circles (Gamakatsu offset Octopus Circle hooks) on my planers and switched to "J" (well, technically Gamakatsu Octopus hooks) a long time back. Hard to say if one did or did not have a better hook-up ratio - though one thing you cannot do with a circle is "set the hook", which at least when fishing planers I have a need to do

Yeah sewell mike is right on upping you circle size a bit from J to circle. Also I use only inline octopus circles, as I got a couple throat snags with the offset circles that you don't seem to get with the inlines.
