This is a pic of a 12 year old coheasion from 1984 fishing at Lake Texoma with my grandpa, dad and guide Floyd Mabry. Limit was either 15 or 20 fish per person and we caught our limit that day of 3 to 8 pound fish... All on topwater. Interesting note on Lake Texoma... After stripers were stocked in the lake noone in that part of the country really knew how to fish for them. Techniques were pretty much trolli g with diving plugs and that was about it. A few years after the stockiing and once the fishery became known a fairly large tournament was held. A single team of anglers from North Carolina showed up and blew away all the local competition using some crazy technique none of the locals had ever heard of or seen before.... Using net caught shad as live bait lol! Floyd Mabry was a rep for Bomber lures at the time and all fish that day were caught on Bomber baits.

I've wanted to try those southern / western striper lakes that are wide open action of smaller fish for the fun of it

Mward - Lake Texoma would be a good one to start. If you are ever out that way let me know and I can get you some good recommendations on a guide as my dad still goes on guided trips there a few times per year. His favorite guide on the lake is a guy they call Little Dave - Little Dave was throwing a 12' cast net in the river one day when he was a teenager. A guy in a truck pulled up to him and asked him "Can you throw that net like that every time?" Little Dave said "yes sir" and the guy asked him if he wanted a job there on the spot. A couple of years later and Little Dave is now one of the best guides on the lake. There is a bit more to the story that is great fun to hear but you have to go on the trip to hear the rest of the story The stripers there do not get huge as they reproduce naturally but they are plentiful.

I used to get out to Austin a lot and kept trying to make it work out to get to one of the lakes near-by - but my work travel's do not take me that direction very often now..... but one day..... I'm also guessing that "Little Dave" is not so little.....
