Looking for feedback. I am able to get a Lowrance elite 7 HDI one-year-old for a good price. would this be a good unit to start with. It has gps also. Then as the funds allow get a bigger touch screen and move this to the bow and link them? Thanks for any help.

I have one. It does "ok" for the money.
If I had to do it over again I would spring for sidescan. A lot of times went hunting bait it would be invaluable. With only the downward sonars you get such a small snapshot of what's around you.

Downscan and sidescan are awesome. They certainly allow you to identify more accurately what you are seeing on your traditional sonar. They also allow you to see fish hiding on the banks when you are trolling. Finally, they are really cool, fun to play with and make pretty pictures you can share with others.
However, they do not replace throwing on gizzard smacks and fishing in places that make sense for the given conditions.
