Thanks for the input Pete. I kinda had a 1,000 budget that I needed to stay in so just looking for the best bang for the buck for that price range. My boat is a 22' hurricane deck boat. I have a remote control trolling motor so I can control from wherever but I'm not sure if I need to run 2 units on my boat.. my transducer and power cables need replaced on the HDS 5 if I were to use that one for anything

Is that a gen 2 unit or gen 3?

That is a Gen 2 unit. I've owned Humminbird and Lowrance, had a 798 unit for a couple years and always liked the sidescan better than the Lowrance even on the smaller screen, but have since upgraded to a HDS 12 Gen 2 when the prices dropped a few months ago. I like the 2d sonar on the Lowrance better, but honestly I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Would love a 12 but in my price range a 9" is probably the best I will find

Nothing wrong with the 9 brother. That's a hell of a unit. If you can get that hds-5 up and running you dont even need a ducer. You can just use it for maps and then the 9 will be all sonar real estate.
I like my 12 a lot, but honestly I think a 9 would do just fine. Shoot, look at that screenshot Stevie put up there of the Hbird 798. Thats a 5" screen just like the HDS5. What more does a brother need??? Also, the Gen2's are getting hard to find. And a new one is over a grand. If you dont care about networking than you could go with a Humminbird Helix 9. Their screen resolution is KILLER. Very impressive. They can be had for $1000 off ebay. I am sure you would be thoroughly happy with that. If you dont care for sidescan/imaging you will save a boatload of cash.
If you go to that BBC site that I sent you to, you will often find lowrance LSS-1 full systems for $300. That would give your 5 side scan and down scan.
Check out that BBC site man. I bet you can find a screamin deal on a one or two year old unit. Some of these bass boat guys just HAVE to have the latest and greatest, and are selling off their gen2's like they are going out of style.............

I noticed the Helix 10 with side imaging is under $1000 right now. Heck of a unit for that price. Only thing is it will not be networkable in the future.
