Any dock light should have bait on it right now at some point in the evening - shallower lights likely will have gizzards and smaller ales - deeper lights likely alewife/bluebacks. Sometimes its a little tougher on the lower-end of the lake - likely as it's not as nutrient rich - but there is plenty of bait down there too. Backs of creeks would also be places to target looking for bait.
Larger gizzard shad will still produce, but we're moving more into alewife time of year....

Yes - this advice pretty much applies lake-wide. find a dock with a light and at some point in the evening the bait will be at the light.

Best to get on water at a light 30 minutes before it starts to get daylight and most lights will be loaded.

Best to get on water at a light 30 minutes before it starts to get daylight and most lights will be loaded. Well, keep in mind it's Memorial Day Weekend - depending the light in question you may be 27th in line to throw Also - 30 min before daylight can be cutting it close... if the light in question does not pan out for whatever reason, you don't leave much time and once light cracks the horizon they are usually gone..... Just remember - "sleep when your dead"

Or do what I do when my tank isn't full of bait....toss and turn sleepless in bed until finally at 4AM you can't take it anymore and go out in the dark and find where the bait is at......and then once you fill the tank up think about how with just another couple of throws you could probably increase the quality of the bait you already have.....really surprising how many times I say "Just one more throw and then I'll be done"

Yep and that "one more throw" gets hung up and destroys your net. Happened to me last week.

penhook, it is my understanding that your grandfather has a house on the lake. i am going to assume he has a dock as well? with power? if true, then buy you a spot light and turn it on in the evening as its getting dark, make sure its shining in the water. a couple hours later you should have a ton of alewives and possibly shad swimming in circles under it. keeping them alive is the tough part. there are some awesome bait lights out there. but you really dont need anything fancy. here is what i use also, it can be harder than you think to catch fish in a school of flipping bait

if you have a light out they will usually be real close to the surface - watch a youtube video of cast net throwing...will give you an idea of what you are doing..
