However often it needs to be changed..
"However often" can be based on a number of factors such as:
bait condition water condition (temp, depth) bait activity level fish preference harassment level etc
I prefer fresh, lively baits when I have them. If I don't have them to swap out, then I will just use what I have and try to make it last.
When fishing alewives on downlines in late spring and early summer, I probably change them every 15 minutes. When pulling gizzards on boards, they swim until they get eaten most days.

Ah yes, the days of sparse bait.
Also known as the days when the fish seem to be the hungriest.

True some days for sure! I'll never forget the day I threw for 6hrs, caught 3 shad - 3 - rode 35minutes to a hole, caught a citation within the first 10minutss of bait being in the water - had a a sprey kill the other two baits while I was reeling in the citation - bastard - rode 35min home! One of the best days ever - hard work paid off!
I've also had days where we filled the tanks full of shad and caught fish at the same time - one man on the cast net, one man on the rods kinda day! If you double up, you better figure it out yourself bc I just saw a nice flip over there!
