My Mom passed this pic along the other day - of my great uncle, I assume while commercial fishing on the Albemare Sound in NC back in the 1920's. The picture is not real clear and I can't make out what type of fish those are, but I know they would catch "rockfish" as well. I guess I come by it honest.... Some info from my Mom that she passed along with the pic.... "back in 1920 your Great-Grandfather Charlie Lane moved his family from Edenton, NC to live on the Albemarle Sound to a place then called Minizes Creek, now known as Holiday Island in Hertford, NC. Not only did your great-grandfather farm, he logged the land and was a commercial fisherman. Your Great Uncles Walton & Winston Lane, who also became fishermen, shared this story of how they would get up before daylight with their Dad, prepare fishing boats and equipment and be at the net fishing location as the sun arose. It was a way of life, a hard way of life. After fishing the nets and returning to the shore landing, they separated their catch prior to boxing up the fish. The wooden boxes of fish were loaded on a mule pulled cart. The two and a half hour trip to the ice plant in Hertford began. Weather and bad roads made the travel difficult. Time was important because they had to "ice down" the fish and deliver to railroad depot the boxes in time for shipment on daily 2:15 train that carried the fish to northern markets. They said roe shad fish would bring 25 cents a pound."

That's pretty cool to know that fishing was a way your family made a living. I thought those fish look like shad. Catching shad is in your blood, that's where you get your success with gizzards from.
