Fished from sun up to about 12:30. Perfect conditions, no wind and overcast. Took off out of my place going to hit some spots I had fished the day before. That plan changed when I saw fish breaking a few hundred yards up lake. The were breaking right in the middle of the channel. Put out four planers two downs and a light line. I was marking fish all over the place had two baits get swirled up at the same time on both sides of the boat. One hit and I missed him. The other never materialized. Then I had something happen that I've never seen before. A fish swirled up on my board itself like it was going to hit it. Eventually he found the bait got that one just under 10lbs. Kept pulling up the channel picking up one more. Eventually the marks disappeared and so did the action. Moved over to the shoreline and pulled a few points. Picked up a 7 on one. Got to the mouth of a creek and debated pulling the creek or continue up the main channel. Pulled into the creek and that proved to be the right decision. Picked up two back to back right on a point at the mount of the creek. They were both the same size a little less than 10 in guessing. I was so pumped I forgot to weigh em. Kept pulling the creek missing two more and loosing my two last big baits. Pulled up on a flat and had an explosion on my bait. Figured he had gotten the bait since it was a 5 or 6 inch shad. Then I saw the bait and he came back and whacked it. He went 16 lb 36". Pulled the next point another big swirl. Chased my bait up and a seagull swooped in picked it up and dropped the bait over my far line. Had one more chase that didn't turn into anything. Decided to call it a day. All action came on planers, pretty awesome for the end of December.

Thanks a lot for the report, sounds like you had one hell of a day. We fished out of the State Park and didn't have nearly as much action. We fished just north of the park and also down by the damn but nothing. On our way back in the inlet to the docs by the cabins I picked up a 25 incher on a downline and we caught a couple of small striper early this morning just at the mouth of the inlet. Whereabouts where you fishing? And any pointers as to where I can pick up some shad? Thanks

Nice report. Sounds like a lot of fun. Hoping I can make it out sometime before Spring. Im fishing on the BW side. I'm a master at finding peanuts but have a really hard time with the real deal. Ive caught about 10 shad over eight inches in over one hundred net throws. A couple hundred peanuts. If your interested in peanuts they are in the back of creeks in about 20'

If i threw my 10 foot net 100 * I would be in my grave. Do you use side scan? It seems like that is the way to go to first find them and net them. Of course I'm talking in theory since I've only got a few myself. I'm still learning how to use my Lowrance Gen 3. I may be going to fish Blackwater tomorrow, any pointers as to far far up river I should go to find some good action? What buoy numbers? Thanks

JT, Love your enthusiasm....stay on it and you'll find them. You're probably wondering why nobody has answered your questions regarding locations of bait and fish...it's because most guys have put in countless days ( years ) on the lake to learn patterns , bait spots, etc. Nobody really wants to publish those , which is really understandable. There's a wealth of info on past posts and current banter. Hang in there, fish a lot.....you will catch 'em.

Thanks Bigun...I have been MIA....winter is basketball coaching season for me. I miss the lake but I've got a heck of a good team this year...( 8th grade boys) ...we should make some noise. Reading those BW reports of 10-16lbers is klilling me. I wish a very healthy, happy, prosperous New Year to all my forum friends. Tight lines to all.

Lund, I guess it's pretty obvious to everyone just how much of a rookie I am, this is the first forum about fishing that I participated in and I've slowly been figuring out exactly what you said. I guess my expectations about information sharing have definitely been running a little high! So I guess I will put in my time at the lake like everyone else. I have actually put in quite a bit of time and enthusiasm so far at Lake Anna and a little bit here. For the record I didn't do too bad today, I caught a 28 and a half inch and a 22 inch as well as a large mouth about 16 inches. I got these in the channel that leads back to the cabins, actually right in front of the first four cabins as you are going into the channel. I caught a 25 incher there yesterday as well. The one yesterday was late afternoon and the ones today or early first thing in the morning and then the bite turned off. See, there, I gave up my honey hole just like that! Guys its not that hard to do! Catch some fish and tell me where you caught them, that's all. I won't ask anymore questions, but I will give you all some reports in good faith and humor, because I'm having a good time down here. Just tell me to shut up when you had enough, hope everyone's doing well

jt, thanks for joining the site, and by all means don't stop asking questions.... Since this is your first fishing forums, I can't stress enough to not take anything personally. We are very protective of our fishery here at SML and since we don't know anything about new members it may seem like the info you seek is slow coming or non existent.... You are pumped up and your enthusiasm is of the charts, which is something we really like in our new members.... slow down and get to know folks a little.... don't give up, things get easier in time...... oh, and you didn't give up a honey hole.... all the honey holes are a long way from there. ... again, welcome, and thanks for joining the site.....

Big gun, you crack me up! The joke is definitely on me! And here I thought everybody was enjoying the holidays at home, I've been fishing since Monday and have barely seen a boat in this area, that's because everybody is up in the rivers! Oh well.... I thought maybe I made a mistake in divulging my spot, thought maybe a hundred boats will be there tomorrow, guess not.... You all have every right to be cautious about the fishery here and I will try and respect it, already saved a fish head and I will also write a diary report to turn in to somebody. I'm very interested in finding out more about both of stripers and the food sources they consume. So much to learn...... You're right about my enthusiasm being off the charts, I fish 10 to 12 hours a day when I come fishing like this. I fish hard! Tomorrow I may take a grand voyage all the way up the Blackwater River, maybe till the end, just for the hell of it. I'll let you know what I find, hopefully a 40 inch striper! So here's another dumb question, how big of a striper have people caught here in the last couple of years? Over 40 inches?
