I'm about to upgrade my rod holders and after doing some research I found a lot of people seem to like Folbe rod holders www.folbe.com Has anyone had any experience with them? Good or bad would be helpful. My issue is that my boys have a hard time getting the rod out of the holder when the rod is loaded. These look like they would solve that problem. I currently have a few driftmasters and 4 of the cheap bass pro holders. Any info would be great thanks.

I tried those on a friends boat but they seemed a bit flimsy to me. I have the driftmasters and I love them. Kids (my 8 year old grandson) just have to crank, rod loads up then lift front of rod up and handle comes right out. He makes it look easy. Like any of them it will take practice. Fyi I did make 12 inch extensions to lift all my holders up so my old back does not have to bend down so far to get the rod.

Have you ever tried the Scotty/Cabelas Quickdraw rodholders that see to be the favorite on this forum?

A good fish on a QuickDraw can be a bit hard to get out too - mainly due to the line pulling to the side putting torque on the rod in the holder. I think it's this twist that can make it hard to get out - if you lift up and back like StriperJohn is saying on the Driftmasters it probably would help too

I ensure my reels are outside the V which holds the rod except in the two rear ones facing straight back. Easy for kids to crank, grab rod in front of holder pull straight up and it comes out. I used all thread and sprayed with plastic coating. The other components from lowes. All told about 3.00 each for extensions.

If you chose driftmasters check out the 1/2 inch PRO DUO ones, they have a bar across them and can fish them as downrods or up for freelines or boards.bought 6 when I changed boats few years back and really like them.used driftmasters for a long time. really solid! Extreme fishing concepts has them on his site, maybe bass pro.

John - so you have any issues with the extension and the base siezing due to corrosion from diff metals? Or do you take them off in between trips?

Thanks for the input. The driftmasters I have are flat. That may be some of my problem also I have always put the reel behind the fork. I will try putting it on the outside, I'm sure that will make it smoother getting the rod out. John - so you have any issues with the extension and the base siezing due to corrosion from diff metals? Or do you take them off in between trips? I have had some issues with the steel driftmasters seizing up in an aluminum base. I always try to remove mine. The driftmasters do a really good job of catching my casting net as it goes over the bow.

The cast net issue will happen with any of them. That is an advantage to the Scotty / Cabelas ones with the low profile mounts - you can quickly remove them if you need - such as when throwing the net - or when our pleasure boating with the family.

Being a black powder hunter, I have many tubes of anti-seize grease around, I coat the ends of the holder that goes into the base with that and I've never had a problems. A buddy uses Vaseline and claims it's as good. If the boat is in a hard rain I generally pull and recoat them Just in case.

Oh yeah and Jason, do not put the reels going directly out the back of the boat outside the V unless they're high angle holders. If it hadn't been for the quick reaction of a bud I'd have lost a rod a couple years ago on a 10 degree holder back there. Even with loose drag and or open spool w/clicker sometimes these fish hit so hard that rod will move in the holder. He caught mine by the very handle end and saved it. LOL I have a couple flat holders that are great for down rods. I use 45 degree on back side planer, 25 on middle planer, and 10-15 on front planer. That ensures the planers run a bit away from each other. The higher the rod tip the better the planer will pull. I only use the 3/8 inch driftmasters, simply because of cost. The 1/2 inch are much sturdier but more costly. I had my grandson practice with getting the rod holder out of the boat by the use of a dog chew toy on the end of the line, with a 100 lb Lab fighting him, him in the boat and go! LOL funny as hell and it works on what he had to do to get the rod out of the holder.
