Wanted to wait till this evening and I cooled off a little before I posted. Crap like this infuriates me. Blaming the world for his own problems and issues. Complaints everywhere he worked. Entitlement is scary thing and is empowering people to do crazy things. The next sick **** is at home right now coming up with ways to one up recording the shooting and posting it to facebook. Recording the murder and posting it just became the new norm.
Heartfelt thoughts prayers to the families.

I don't know what I can say other than share my tears of sorrow for two lovely young adults who had everything going for them. Happy, successful, just starting their journeys. Just sad...
My prayers go to them and their loved ones and I pray that our youth will get back to valuing empathy over entitlement.

A terrible tragedy. And unimaginable that it could happen as it did. I will keep families of those lost in prayers.

We've got a mental health crisis in our country and people are gonna blame guns.....What a tragedy. Were these things happening 30- 40 years ago and we just never heard about them?....I don't think so....things have changed. Scary crap....sorry MWard.

. Scary crap....sorry MWard. Sorry for what? Expressing your feelings on this incomprehensible event? No need for a sorry there - I had my say of choice words myself today as I sat here at the lake today feeling shocked thena bit worried then a bit helpless, then pissed off - it's disconnected from us but it is also part of us - we've probably all stood where they stood in their last moments at some point and I think that brings it that much closer to home. We think about what could have happened if we'd been there, or getting gas before a day of fishing etc. I'm thankful it happened at 6:45am and not on a bustling weekend. Im thankful that those here were safe and not involved - even when they were within earshot of it when the event happened. I'll tell you I'm mixed on this mental health debate. Clearly this guy had issues - but even if we had the worlds best mental health system - would he have been off the streets or have gotten help to prevent him from getting to that point. Is sort of doubt it. I don't mean to make light of those with true mental health issues that need help they can't get - I just feel it has become the automatic counter argument to the gun control argument. And mind you I'm certainly not in that side of the fence either - if anything this may just push me to take a step for myself and my wife that I've avoided for a long time. Seeing those videos that can't be unseen, seeing the pics of a place that I associate with fun, laughter, good times with the family, etc being blanketed in what looked like 100 satellite trucks from a media circus rodeo leaves unsettling feelings. Seeing the world looking at little ol' Smith Mountain Lake with this lens is just saddening. The irony involved when this little happened during a story about the 50th anniversary of a SML and all the good things that go on here. Seeing the blue lights of police cars still on site tonight at 12am is not what we should be seeing. I went out on the lake tonight mostly to try and return a sense of normalcy - take control back of the situation to know that the world is still turning and the sun will rise tomorrow (and with bait in the tank). Anyway - like many have said - the focus should be on remembering those lives lost way too young - not the musings of a troubled man. Crazy things happen in this world for reasons we will never understand - or be capable of understanding. We need to put more focus on the positive, the good, the here and now and less on all the rest. That will help in itself right things.

I do not think we need to get into the politics of this issue, that to me demeans the very point of grieving over the lost lives of these two young folks. Our idiot govenor tried to make the politics of the issue more important than their lost lives!

"seeing those videos that can't be unseen" One of those things that I didn't need to see. Truly regret watching it. I woke up last night at 1:40 a.m and that was on my mind and tears in my eyes.

"seeing those videos that can't be unseen" One of those things that I didn't need to see. Truly regret watching it. I woke up last night at 1:40 a.m and that was on my mind and tears in my eyes. A senseless, pitiful creature creates a video game out of life. A third person shooter with no empathy whatsoever. I pity the environment which created this. And sadly, this environment surrounds us all. Her face was so beautiful and full of life. Something to treasure. She did not deserve or provoke this. Startled, screaming, running away... DEAD. It reminds me of that startled look of Oswald as he was shot. Only she did nothing to provoke this. She was immersed in her job senseless to her surroundings... just looking to create a story. She graduated from the university where I teach. He graduated from my alma mater. They were murdered where many of us throw our nets in the middle of the night. And it all sounded like metal sheets being dropped on the ground as I had no clue what was going on. Senseless of my surroundings.. just looking to catch a fish. This is not breaking news, this breaks my heart. Life is so precious. Cease every moment possible my friends.

I didn't watch any of the videos, I have seen to much bad stuff in my life that I couldn't avoid. It is quite simply tragic and like others have said it makes me sad and angry. The folks that try to make political hay out of events like this make me sick. This is not about gun control it is about evil and unfortunately evil exists even here at SML. I can't stand that but it's true here as it is everywhere. For me being prepared and being situationally aware are part of dealing with it.

If I could think of anything to ease the suffering of those who have lost a family member or friend suddenly and chaotically, I would, but I can't. But I would like to acknowledge the efforts and sacrifices of our local law enforcement. Every school was on perimeter lockdown and each one had sheriff deputy or other officers stationed to watch the children of our community--to keep them safe and shelter them from what they weren't sure was happening themselves. None of them knew if that gunman might arrive unexpectedly at any point in the morning, where they stood guard at schools. I'd like to thank each of them personally if I could.

Very sad to see someone lose their life at such a young age. It will be even more stressful for the parents to get over the event which can affect their longevity. I have seen similar situations where one of the parents developed cancer due to the stress and passed away ten years later.
Luckily, he was caught due to the license plate readers that are along some of the interstates. I have seen these around Staunton and Harrisonburg and it looks like Augusta County Sheriff's Department was the agency that picked it up.
