can i get some input from you guys. friday when i was fishing at sml, i went to the area i wanted to fish and the was a boat on that point. so i fished just across from him on the other point ( b37 ).wasnt long they left the area. later that day, the same thing, same boat. so i started fishing 100 yds below him. i was fishing a very in a small circle. got hung, broke off, and drifted slightly into a small cut. all the while this other boat was headed in my direction. i was trying to get things going again, by now this other boat is right here, it appeared he wanted the shoreline i was on. feel like i got pushed out. dont know if he was fishing that before i arrived or not but he was 100yds away when i got there. looking for some thoughts on what to do in that case. thanks

Start fishing with some scruffy looking friends ( bigjon, leo, SS) and they will give way. ;D
Honestly, I don't know. Guess it just depends on what type of mood I'm in. I know I've seen some pretty heated confrontations on the water over the years.

I have this happen all the time on Claytor. It is a small lake, and has considerable pressure, especially bass fishing. For the most part the bass fisherman there could care less if they cut in front of you, or come with in 20' leaving a huge wake. This is not the case with all, but for the most part. If I got mad or retaliated everytime this happened I would stay mad. Having a confrontation or getting mad is really not worth it. So I just try not to pay attention to it. As far as someone invading where I are fishing, I will stand my ground and keep on fishing. I will go as far as moving my boat a little so they have to move off the track they are on, but when I pass em, I just wave. Being nice but letting them know that I am not giving ground.
One of the bigger issues especially this year has been wake boats and kids on jet skis. They seem to not care at all how close they come to a boat that is fishing. It seems as if all these young kids have passed the boating test and the parents think they have suddenly become very knowledgeable and experienced. They seem to have free reign all over the lake. I would also imagine that this is an issue at SML.

Well ill tell ya what works for me, What i like to do when put in that position.... is to do half plain drive-by's until they get mad and leave!!
Nothing makes me more mad then to have a boat pull in 50ft in front of me and start fishing, thats why i started packing!! lol

I dont pull in front of other boats; however, I will have no problem pulling up beside or behind other boats.
Second, I follow the navigation laws. If I come out of a cove and am working the bank or even pulling my boards I stay right. So if I have the bank on my right you better go to my left. We are going to pass Port to Port.

I have had another instance that caught me off guard. This situation did get me a little hot under the collar. I was was jigging over marked fish and continued to troll at .4 mph, another boat came and was pulling u-rigs running circles around me and the other 4 boats there ( that did not bother me). The boat made a pass about 50ft infront of me and hung a tree. He came to a stop and it was then up to me to avoid him. I was not looking forward at the time because I was rebaiting a line. I was not left with much time to respond.
I guess what I would ask of the other driver in that situation or from a boat that is trolling in front of me. If u come off power and plan to stop sound your horn with a few short blast.
We all get distracted when fishing and we do not want to tangle lines or even more do not want to crash our boats. If I need to move I will, I just need a heads up please.

I have noticed over the years that if you start a conservation with the people in the other boat, the animosity usually goes away replaced by cooperation. But the key word here is usually. I have run into some people that when you talk to them they actually get madder. But it usually pays just to ask them how they are doing and then see if things are going to turn friendly or not. If not I just leave. When I am tempted to yell back at them, and I have done that, my wife usually says, "they are just jerks and you can't change them so why try." So I just leave. I don't want some jerks ruining my day on the water. Watch next week I will probably get into fight at the ramp o something.

Now jet skis are a whole new story. There is no hope that they will respect anybody.

Part of the problem is there are a lot of people out there that think they own the lake. Ive been ying the fibefglass of the boatelled/cursed at by property owners for throwing my net in water in front of thier dock or light. Ive even had some one use their boat to push the CC i used to have out of thier way from where my boat was tied up so they could fish that spot. Wound up goug

I know a some guys throw their net on my light but I have not met any bad apples yet. ( well, actually of them has a weakness for jetski girls, but I won't hold that against him)..... A lot of times I'm on the dock loading up the boat around 5:30 am. and some one will pull up to catch bait. They will ask me if I've already caught my bait. When I say no, they don't want to throw until I've got mine. Dang, how did we go from boats to jetskis to dock lights. Bass, keep those bad apples up your way.

ITs all about common sense. Somefolks have it, some dont. And some dont know anybetter.
Im a nice guy, some say im modest and giving. I enjoy to see other people out having fun catching fish. I enjoy teaching aswell. I want people to learn. I enjoy people having a good time. If i didnt, i wouldnt take folks out on charter trips.
A few self rules i have;
my most important rule, If a boat is already fishing a certain spot. I yield them the option to have it. (1. If I really want to fish it still, I start behind them at a distance. (2. If they like it so much, they want to turn around and fish it again, I yield to them again.
I dont like crowds, but summertime spots can be crowded. So I will start elsewere and fish. (1. If i still cant find fish, and the parking lot of boats is catching fish, i wil ease my way in, but try to not cut anyone off.
If birds are diving or fish are busting. Dont rush the fish. I see waaay to many people do this. Set your boat down away from them. And ease in to the fish with the trolling motor. Dont leave your big motor running. And dont cut in front of me and stop, when you see me easing into them. Dont cast over my line either.
If some one comes into my area. I try to give room and have enjoyable fishing with all neighbors. IF we meet fishing coming from different areas, i try to pass with 100% respect by moving my lines or yielding my casting as we pass by (1. general rule is, you try to do the same. I dont own nothing except the fiberglass im floating in. If your rude, then I drop my respect and keep doing what im doing like your not there.
If your Spike, or the high pitch voiced old man in the blue and silver triton. Then chances are, i'll run over top of you like your not there. Its became way to old to me to have these two fools, rush, run, cut me off and cuss at me (thats mostly spike) because i was somewere you wanted to be, although i had no idea you wanted to be there nor did i know you was coming. Do i care... no. i.e. at a bait light that spike does not own or has anything to do with except catch bait like everybody else. First come, first serve. If theres a crowds you take turns with respect for everybody else. If you want to cuss and yell at your clients, that fine by me. If you want to yell or cuss at me, because im fishing a certain area or a certain way. Tough sh*t... Im not above finishing an argument or situation. If your there first, then in mindset i go back to my rule #1.
Thanks really all i can think of right now
