This needs to become a focused issue across the various fisheries at SML - we have an organized voice from the Striper Club - there are a number of Bass groups at SML, but from my external view they tend to be more worried about organizing & fishing tournaments and do not getting active in issues for the fishery. I know there are more than a number of folks that care passionately about this and are willing and ready to speak up - but it needs some coordination & willingness to take that time and energy spent fishing some of those tournaments and turning it into focus on this to ensure there is a fishery to have tournaments with in the future. Now that a number of bass guys have put up their own money with the F1 Tiger bass stocking, I think there is more focus here than in the past. I've had a few talk with me about this - and we need to keep this discussion going on how we get organized on this to drive the issues. However, it has to be backed with solid data facts - specific info regarding the impact that has occurred from the lack of grasses, what the future looks like without it, what the economic impact to the SML region is if the fisheries decline, etc.
Unfortunately, too many folks just want to gripe about it vs. getting coordinated & involved to drive issues and do anything about it.

SO how do you get the grass back? Kill the carp? Just curious.
My house is at B-13 in a cove and we have no grass in the water there. Come to think of it, in the last 7 years we have been coming to SML I don't ever remember seeing grassy bottom.

the best way to help is get the people that don't want to feel the grass on there feet the heck out of the lake and send them packing

There are politics in the game department just like any other organization. They never should have introduced the grass carp. In Waynesboro due to the pressure of Trout Unlimited, they took the dam out. It was well known back in the mid 50's that the stream flow was not sufficient by July that they stopped stocking trout. Now the river has nothing but carp and even the bass have gone further down stream. Talking several years ago with some trout fishermen near the Waynesboro Nursery area, they said there were very few trout due to the mink eating all of them. When asked if they had seen any mink or mink sign, they had no answer. I trapped the river back in the 50's and mink were rare. Dams reduce the current flow and prevent erosion. The next hurricane in the area will be pay back to the City. There is four to six feet of rock and gravel waiting to be washed down stream during the next flood. The area around Invista has already filled in due to the hurricane Agnes in 1972. Additional fill will only further raise the water level in the downtown city area when it floods. Will Trout Unlimited pickup the tab for the damages?? What the Game Department should do is set up a Sanctuary Area in the State Park. This area should be off limits and contain water lilies, cattails, and other water weeds to provide cover and food for the stocked stripers. This would greatly increase the survival rate. Fish are not stupid and will seek out food when they become larger and migrate to other parts of the lake. To increase the bait fish, a program should be started to encourage property owners to place their Christmas tree under their dock where possible. In some areas, they could also plant water lilies if there are no muskrats.
