I'll be at sml 7-12 to 7-19 and will be there with my 8 year old and my two 10 year old nephews. I am mainly interested in hoping they can catch some small mouth. We will be staying between the state park and bridge water. I have been there before and had most luck towards the dam.
any tips on where to fish and lure choice would be great. Thanks in advance for your time.

A friend of mine was just there for a week. He had luck with albino and white ice super flukes. Caught SM on bubblegum super flukes. He fished the shoals on both sides at mouth of Craddock and down the mountain to right of R1. Early an till 9 (when crazies come out) and last hour of daylight.

Well finally after 111 views someone finally decides to reply! Thanks a Bunch striperjohn! I just don't know about this forum stuff. I have joined quite a few and just can't seem to get anywhere. Oh well. Last time I was there we fished senkos wacky style with no weight and did ok. Do you know how he was rigging them?

There's more striper fisherman on here than bass. I don't fish smallmouth but have caught a few by accident, mostly on live bait, near shallow rocky bottoms. This time of year with water temps. I would think they would be a little deeper. Like John said look for rocky shoals or bottoms. Remember this is coming from someone with little experience with them. Good luck and enjoy your time with the boys.

We are staying in Huddleston close to the dam. It seems to me that that is a good place to try?

The dam will hold deeper and cooler water. Like I said in my other post to you, I don't fish that far down. But have heard and seen good reports from that area. You will have to search. You might try hiring a guide the first day, they will put you on the fish and probably create some great memories for them boys. Then the next day head out on your own after some quick teachings of a guide. I think you can get half day guided trip for less than $400?

I'll update as our vacation goes. Thanks again

I fish mainly stripers on SML, but make a LM/SM trip to Canada every year so I'm a greenfish guy as well. LOL. Those shoals actually are a good bet for LM/SM and stripers. They have very shallow water with drops and ledges down to a 100 feet plus. Fish are generally in that area in the summer. Rig those flukes with a 3/0 offset hook, insert hook into the head, turn the hook and then run the hook up thru the back over with hook/barb exposed on the back for open water. To make it weedless turn and push the hook thru the back and let barbed point lay in pouch on under side of the fluke. Senko's/stiko's are good as well. Bubblegum is SM's favorite color early and late. Once sun gets higher switch to albino, shad colored, even clear.

Went to bass pro today and picked up some of the flukes you suggested. Are you using a weight on the flukes or not? Texas or a Carolina rig? Bubble gum has never worked around here so had to go get some. Around here it's called a faggot worm! Hahaha. Whatever works right?

I use and offset worm hook with no weight, makes it a jerk bait that will sink very slowly but its a sight bait that you jerk twice let sink repeat. Some use a small splitshot in the front. You can rig it weedless or for open water depending upon which way the hook it set. Look it up online it's kind of difficult to explain. Yes, some fish it Carolina rig and/or texas rig, but the texas rig takes a lot of movement out of the bait. Rig them with a jig head as well and works great for stripers.
