I am fairly new to this area and this lake. With that being said I come from lakes where cranking 15 feet plus actually works. I have cranked this lake countless hours trying to get it to work with no success. I pick up a dropshot and bang 10 fish. I often voice my frustration at local tackle shops only to hear some yahoo say "Cranking works you are just doing it wrong" I hear that a lot yet no person every puts up or shuts up. I understand its a finesse lake and that wins a lot of money. I am not trying to win money. I want to crank and cannot seem to unlock this puzzle. So please if anyone here is real and genuine please help. I do not want to hear a bunch of garbage and lies like most bass fisherman give. I need some honest help. Thanks in advance for anyone who decides to be truthful.

I don't bass fish much, but I was out a couple weeks ago and had no problem catching bass on crankbaits. They were between 5 and 9 feet deep on fairly flat points, back in the creeks. I was bumping bottom with my crankbaits and they were choking them. Seemed easy enough.

I think the fish are just now starting to set up deep. I have found that the bass in this lake stay shallow for much of the year. In fact I think this lake fishes shallow 90% of the time. After the bass spawn the shad start spawning and it keeps them pretty shallow. Now that the shad spawn is winding down and it's really getting hot they will start getting in that 15 to 25 ft range. I'm no expert at summer time cranking so I can't really help you with specifics. Most of my cranking is done during the prespawn. If I were gonna crank during the summer on this lake I would fish flats in 6 to 10 ft of water during may and early june. Late June and later I would fish points or humps 15 to 20 ft deep. I will tell you that I like the rapala dt series crankbaits in blue back color. I catch more fish on a swimbait fished deep than crankbaits on this lake. Hope this helps in some way.

Well by cranking I mean deep only. Secondly I would love to try deep swimbaits any suggestions to lure and area for a newbie? Also where can I buy some good swimbaits around lynchburg?

Don't know about Lynchburg, but I'd hit up Captains' Quarters at Halesford Bridge on SML - Dewayne knows his stuff when it comes to bass fishing and can help get you setup with the right lures for the lake....

I like the keitech swing swimbaits on a revenge head. Weight depends on the depth. I fish them mostly on points and flats and I fish them slow.

If you can't find a good local tackle shop I would check out tacklewarehouse. They have a great selection of swimbaits.

I do not want to hear a bunch of garbage and lies like most bass fisherman give. Bass fishermen telling lies and handing out garbage, no way that happens on here. Now those striper guys....that's a totally different story.

Right on greg. I had a buddy with me catch a nice 29lb 14oz fish weighed at Parkway a few years back. Word came back to me via the "striper grapevine" and the fish had gained 12 lbs. Lol!

That's the truth, John. That was the biggest large mouth I have seen in a few years. Bigun may have boated a 69 "pounder" too.

Where is a good place to start. I only know one ramp. Parkway.... This entire lake looks the same to me. Where would swimbaits and cranks work?

Do you have GPS? I would head up one of the river arms and look for more stained water. I think the water is too clear on the lower lake for those techniques. I'm not saying you can't catch them in clear water but for me I have better luck further up lake.

part of the problem i see, is practically ignoring what may be solid advice due to your own stubbornness. stratos told you exactly what he does or would do, and when, and how deep, and what structure to fish. but you being stubborn a bit only want to deep crank. the problem here is, you can deep crank till your blue in the face, but if the fish dont want it that deep or just arent that deep then youre not going to catch anything. say there is two schools of bass. one school is 15-20 feet deep and not feeding or hitting cranks, the other school is 5-10 feet deep and feeding actively and knocking the paint off of cranks. now, why would you waste time going after the deeper fish? ...just for the sake of deep cranking? all im saying is, target the active fish and figure out what they want most.
SML aint like your other lakes for one, the fish are funny in this lake, and real slick and finicky too. i still have no idea why the 3lb 20 inch channel cats at SML like to bite lightly and peck at my baits with small jerks, yet the same size channel cats at Gaston grab my bait and just straight bow the rod over like they should...
