Who's going to still be throwing A-rigs this fall? Or is it a fad that's already passed.....
For those of you that tossed them last year, what did you find worked best when targeting breaking striper - what line/test and what type of rod. I have a couple I picked up last winter that never got a test, and with fall (almost?) here and the fish starting to break I wanted to try a few out.....

The only time I got to throw one at breaking fish was in the spring. I used Berkley powerbait swinnin' shad. Was using Berkley Big Game 25lb test, on a 7' heavy action Ugly Stik. Caught a nice 32 incher.

I got a big order in. Ive so far only experimented with flukes, paddle tail flukes and storm swim shad. So far my fav pattern is straight tailed flukes with a paddle tail fluke in the center..
I never casted it into breaking fish. Id cast and slow roll it back in. The speed of the retrieve depended on the depth.
I did find, that having the A-rig tick the bottom resulted in a fish almost every cast one day. but I gave up that tactic when I lost two in 4 cast. Thats roughly $50 bucks.. damn...
7Ft, MH All star Bass Rod matched with a Abu Garcia Revo Inshore reel with 50lb Power Pro braid. I will attach a HD berkley coast lock ball bearing swivel to the main line. So i can just clip it onto the A Rig.

My cousin tried fishing that rig out west in breaking fish. He said "never again" as he hit two fish at once both above 10 lbs and they tied him up for well over 15 minutes before one of them got off and he could land the other fish. He said in the meantime his friends with him caught two more fish apiece as the fish were all around his boat. ;D Personally it sounds like one of those thing we'd all like to try, maybe once. ;D

One thing for sure, there is nothing like an A rig to build a bird's nest.

They wear me out throwing them... Not sure they are worth it.

I have one hanging in the garage, loaded with swim flukes. Only place I have ever thrown it is off the dock the day I bought it back in the spring. I'm going to carry it to the boat this weekend, I don't think I've gotten the first bite on it in the garage.

Ive thrown them plenty just not to breaking stripers....yet. The rod is 7'6 heavy, built specific for the A-rig with a shimano Citca reel spooled with 65lb braid. Ive got the Berkly Swim Shads on them (The one's that are packaged for A-Rigs) which work good in my opinion. Since this rod was built specific for the A-rig, one stays tied to it all the time.

I've been throwing about the same setup as mytoyz although I've only done it it for a total of about 3 or 4 hours over multiple outings last year. I only caught 1 fish but had a ton of short strikes. This year I'm going to try using stinger trebles with one of the trebles tucked in the bottom towards the tail to see if that'll help my hook up ratio. I was thinking about just putting a treble on the bottom of the main hook but 5 hanging treble hooks is probably not a good idea with this rig. Another possibility is a trap hook like what's shown here; www.bdoutdoors.com/forums/fishing-chit-chat/336757-trap-rig-swim-bait.htmlFWIW: I've never got a hit at all when using a swimbait jighead. They've all come when using a 1/16oz 5/0 tex-posed weighted EWG offset hooks. I use the weights just to keep the baits from rolling. I'm also going to play with taking the swivels off so I can go completely weightless. Oh yeah, I'm also going to try using 20-25lb flouro instead of braid just because the power pro braid tends to dig in on itself if I'm not real careful casting it out and the one time I did land a fish. Maybe I'd have better luck with a different brand of braid? Be interesting to hear how others are setting up thier A Rig's. -Bob

I have had some really good days in March using Storm pre rigged pearl swimbaits (1/4 oz.) I'm throwing a Vendetta 7'6" heavy rod with a Revo SX and 25lb fluorocarbon. Most stripers were 22"-28". March has been my best month of 2012 with the A-rig.

Right now is the best time to be using umbrella rigs and A-Rigs (we call them E-Rigs because we make ours). I rig mine with mostly Zoom Swimmin Flukes using jigs. For casting I use 1/8 ounce jig heads and either the Swimmin Fluke Jr or the larger one. For trolling I use 1/4 or 3/8 ounce heads and swimbaits or the Swimmin Flukes. Here in North Carolina we are killing stripers on these rigs. Spotted bass as well as largemouth bass love them also. By the way you can buy this stuff on my website as I sell what I use. www.ExtremeFishingConcepts.com Call us about the jig heads and Flukes.

Buddy of mine caught 2 yesterday with one going 31" on the A-rig paired with my triple tail grubs so I would say they are still good to go
