Geeez I still have images off a dumb@ss wading down the stairs and into the water during one of the runs attempting to catch gizzards with his landing net. No lifejacket and possibly half drunk. I had to leave before I saw him drown.

I had to leave before I saw him drown. Based off the time I was there, ain't no way in hell I'm going down the steps while they're releasing. I saw a guy's rod get ripped from his hands and tore off downriver at about 30mph.

We used to go get bait down there when it was tough on the lake, small 4' nets thrown in the eddies behind rock along the edge is where they are at.Don't think it would be smart to throw a big net in that current,Might get pulled in.One of the first few times I went down there, within 30 min of pulling water I shreaded 2 4' net and had 7 gizzards to show for it.A old black man who had set back watching me go at it got up when they quit pulling water filled his 5 gallon bucket with water, and started picking up shad stranded in the rocks, had 15 within 15 mins or so.Boy did I feel smart!

20 years ago shad actually came up river in numbers. I remember being able to use a dip net and getting shad.

You still can below the dam. I use stainless steel crab dip nets to catch them.

why the stainless nets? Won't that tear up the shad? Is it due to the length/style of the net or the robustness of the net mesh?

We get right on the rail with the net handle being 8-9 feet long and sweep it down along the rocks. Some days you get 6 or more in the net some days 1 or 2 and some days none. LOL. The regular fiber and mesh nets get torn up when you scrape them along the rocks. I have a couple that I use where I put a garden hose along the ring to protect the net, that works until you wear it out. I've never seen any damage to the shad from either net.
