Arrived early morning. WT = 55. Caught some mongos early then caught a bunch of money makers with an occasional mongo mixed in. I figured what the heck and threw the little guys in the tank. I wanted to fish today anyway and catching a Mongo every other throw for 3 hours just wasn't what I had planned for. Additionally, BIG T and a Heavy Grunden raincoat pushes my limits! After catching bait, I decided to pull a creek. I kept seeing single swirls and hearing gurgles but they were not interested in my bait. So...I got out my trusty spoon and waited for another swirl. I kid you not, a swirl then appeared about 200 feet on my port side. Thus, I flung my metal at it and what do you know...my first fish was on a spoon! Cawwwwwww! So then I decided to pull some flats with visions of ripping jaws off. And boy did I get my wish today! The action was non stop! Here is a cool picture of me releasing a decent 9 pounder as another board was getting ready to take off. If you look closely, you can see the little money maker running for his little life. Didn't work out for him! The only downside today was size. My fish ranged from 4 to 11 pounds and I only broke 30 inches 2 times. On average, the fish were around 8 pounds. And...they did nothing but scare my mongos! I can't believe I am almost complaining. IT WAS A GREAT DAY ON THE WATER!

Be glad you had those smaller baits, fished the other side in the rain yesterday morning with 12-15 huge leftover gizzards and had them beaten mercyless and only boated 1 fish and broke 1 off, same area that we had fished the past two days.Thursday was the best for us with 15 boated, only 3 less than 30"and one right at 37".great report as allways! Edited this to say not trying to hijack your thread, just stating how we did...kenny

My thought is we are chatting and conversation doesn't require us to stay on my topic. Thanks for sharing that info. I was starting to think that the fish are making their transition to small bait only. And once they do...it is time to "summerize" my boat! Knowing that Mongo time is still here makes me very happy! a 37 incher would be a great bonus.

Great report! We only come twice a year at this point so I wish I knew where to catch. That will come with time I suppose. I hope we some can move here some day!

Great report! We only come twice a year at this point so I wish I knew where to catch. That will come with time I suppose. I hope we some can move here some day! I go quite often and each time is different. In general, more stripers travel to the northern parts of the lake in Fall and Spring. Because this water is much more shallow than the rest of the lake, these seasons make it easier to catch fish. Not to mention, the fish are more active during these awesome times! Frankly, the fish are the easy part. It's catching and maintaining healthy bait that can be hard. Once you secure your bait, I really believe you could catch a fish anywhere on this lake above the bridge on the Roanoke. If I were you, I would look around a bit and determine what you think might be the worst spot to fish. Then...do yourself a favor and unleash a full spread of bait on this spot. And make sure you don't pay any attention to your poles because there ain't no fish there anyway!

Yes,really great to catch some nice fish again, having to fish more close to home the last couple years instead of sml all the time and its not the same here in nc, with there 8 or 4 (depending on lake) fish limit, some of these guys think they have to keep them all.In these shallow lakes they will never grow to great sizes, but they surely won't if they keep all they catch.

That sounds like my home lake...Lake Anna. One of our best guides has no issue with showing the Internet his extraordinary 16 pound fish hanging from a hook with a bunch of 7 pounders. You certainly won't hear him complaining by the lack of quality because his customers want numbers and he gives it to them. On the contrary, many of our SML guides will tell their clients that they would appreciate if they would throw back the big ones even if they are legal. It's all about the culture that is created and maintained. And this board has much to do with positive culture maintenance.

Yeah, have been at this a long time and seen a few lakes raped and it's sad.Seems the longer I fish the less I feel the need to show someone "look I caught a big one",All though that gopro thing is really neat.Don't get me wrong I like to eat a mess of fish once in a while, but I can't even rember the last time I kept a really large fish.
